MAYO EARNS SECOND VICTORY WITH 2-OVER-PAR 215 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS GOLF CLUB
Johnson makes clean sweep of Girls Division at Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior

AUSTIN, Texas β€” Austin native Robert Mayo, fought for the win in the Boys Division Friday after posting a three-day total of 2-over-par 215 at the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior at the The University of Texas Golf Club. Jennifer Johnson of La Quinta, Calif., won the Girls Division with a 4-over-par 75, after leading all three days and finishing with a tournament total of even-par 213.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior was a 54-hole stroke play event held at The University of Texas Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 120 players, 90 boys and 30 girls, from 12 states and Mexico. The Boys Division played the course at 7,170 yards and the Girls Division played at 6,113 yards.

Grinning from ear to ear, Mayo was very happy to clinch his second win of the summer before heading off to begin his freshman year at Davidson College. Starting one stroke behind the lead entering the final round, Mayo had a solid start off the tee. Mayo felt his short game was strong and was able to make key putts, including a 25-foot birdie on No. 17 to help keep the lead.

β€œIt has been a great summer and it feels pretty nice,” Mayo said about his victory. β€œI felt solid at the beginning and played stress-free.”

Jordan Spieth of Dallas, finished second two strokes back from the lead at 4-over-par 217 for the tournament. Alex Moon of Dallas, finished third with 5-over-par 218 after posting the low-round score of 4-under-par 68. Devin Miertschin of El Paso, Texas, finished fourth at 6-over-par 219 and tied for fifth were Thomas Tatum of Dallas, and Dillon Rust of Edmond, Okla., with 7-over-par 220s.

Now with her fifth AJGA tournament win under her belt, Johnson was pleased with her tournament play. She entered the final round with an 11-stroke lead out of the gate, with back-to-back 2-under-par 69s the first two days. For Johnson it was her first time making back-to-back scores in the 60s. After struggling with a front nine of six bogeys, Johnson was able to finish strong with a 1-under-par 35 on the back nine, tallying a 40-foot birdie putt on No. 16.

β€œIt was hard to start today with an 11-stroke lead,” Johnson said. β€œI had high expectations for myself and had some nerves, which showed from the start, but overall I'm very happy.”

Johnson, who is ranked 34th in the Polo Golf Rankings, won the Mission Hills Desert Junior in June and will be playing in the PING Phoenix Junior in two weeks.

Rounding out the top-three in the Girls Division were Julie Yang of Phoenix, in second, with a tournament total of 7-over-par 220, including the low final-round score of even-par 71. Nikki Koller of Lewisburg, Ky., finished third after posting 12-over-par 225 for three days.
