BATES, ERDY SHARE MEDALIST HONORS AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
Wisniewski takes Girls Division
MARYSVILLE, Ohio — Kyle Bates of Avon Lake, Ohio and David Erdy of Boonville, Ind., both carded 2-under-par 70s Sunday to take Boys Division medalist honors at the Srixon Qualifier for the Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament. In the Girls Division, Natalie Wisniewski of Williamsville, N.Y., took medalist honors after shooting a 5-over-par 77.
Conducted by the AJGA, the Srixon Qualifier for the Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament was an 18-hole stroke play, shotgun start event held at Darby Creek Golf Course. The 98-player field featured players from 11 states and Canada. The Girls Division played the event at 6,114 yards, while the Boys Division played at 6,789 yards.
Bates, who will play golf this fall at Denison University, hit his last 11 greens en route to his victory Sunday.
“I was really hitting my irons well today,” Bates said. “Hitting every green on the front nine really put me in position for birdies.”
Erdy said he relied on his consistency to help him card four birdies and the low round of the day.
“I made some good putts and hit the fairways when I needed to,” Erdy said. “I have been playing well all summer and it is all coming together.”
Joining Bates and Erdy in this week's event will be Sean Keating of Cincinnati, Ohio, Colin Allen of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Christopher Hahn of Bellbrook, Ohio, Craig Osterbrock of Wilmington, Ohio, James Vandewalle of Columbus, Ohio, Aaron Ebert of Huron, Ohio and Paul Hammerschmidt of Westerville, Ohio.
Matthew Burkhart of Lancaster, Pa., Christopher Orlando of Broomall, Pa., Blanton Farmer of Lexington, Ky., and Matthew Alessi of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., also qualified, but opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
In the Girls Division, Wisniewski, who was playing in her first AJGA event, did not make a three putt in her round. She said she relied on the advice of her favorite professional golfer, recent British Open Champion Padraig Harrington.
“When Padraig made a six on a hole during the Open, he said he didn't think about it and just focused on getting more birdies,” she said. “That's the advice I try to follow. I am confident I can shoot lower.”
Along with Wisniewski, Suzie Lee of E. Northport, N.Y., Kerri Dice of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Alexis Therman of Saline, Mich., all qualified and will play in this week's event.
Elizabeth Nagel of DeWitt, Mich., also qualified, but opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
