GRAHAM GRABS TWO-STROKE LEAD HEADING INTO FINAL ROUND

Lavy takes lead of Girls Division at Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior

SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. — Austin Graham of San Clemente, Calif., leads the Boys Division with a two-day total of 1-under-par 139 at the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior at Indian Hills Country Club after carding 3-under-par 67 Wednesday. Emma Lavy of Fayetteville, Ark., leads the Girls Division 9-over-par 149 for two rounds.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Indian Hills Country Club. The tournament field consists of 75 boys and 24 girls from 20 states and one foreign country. The Boys Division is playing the course at 6,518 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,971 yards.

Graham, who will be attending Cal-Davis in the fall, has played two solid rounds of golf thus far in his final AJGA tournament. Graham carded 2-over-par 72 Tuesday and credits his driver to his successful play. On the 155-yard, par-3 third hole, Graham was an inch away from a hole-in-one, and putted in for birdie. With an early birdie, Graham felt confident in his game and played aggressively, holing out from the bunker on No. 7 for birdie and also carding birdies on Nos. 9 and 12. Graham concluded his second round strong, posting an eagle on the 522-yard, par-5 18th hole.

“I was confident all day and the great competition I had made me play better,” Graham said. “Tomorrow I just want to play well and just take it shot-by-shot. I just am going out there and acting like it's another round of golf with my friends, but I'm excited to be in a leader group.”

Ty Spinella of Aledo, Texas and Gary Quinn of Anthem, Ariz., are tied for second with two-day totals of 1-over-par 141. Ben Juffer of West Des Moines, Iowa, Kevin Kring of Springfield, Mo., and Tyler Rice of Duncan, Okla., sit tied for fourth with 2-over-par 142s.

In the Girls Division, Lavy shot 4-over-par 74 for the second round, after being tied for second Tuesday at 5-over-par 75. After posting five birdies first round she didn't feel she played her best, but managed to card a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 17, giving her the confidence to know she could still make a birdie putt. Lavy managed to avoid double-bogeys during the round after having three the first day. Lavy said her ball striking wasn't strong, but tried to hit the fairways and play the best she could from difficult positions.

“Tomorrow I have the same mentality—to play my best,” Lavy said. “I don't want to get wrapped up in the scores, but I am looking for red numbers on the board.”

Anne Ormson of Granger, Ind., sits in second, one-stroke back at 10-over-par 150 for two days and Chelsey Cothran of Springfield, Ark., is in third at 11-over-par 151.
