THORSETH EXTENDS LEAD TO TWO SHOTS AFTER 1-UNDER-PAR 71
Thead grabs lead in the Girls Division

ABILENE, Texas β€” Benjamin Thorseth of Richmond, Texas, carded a 1-under-par 71 Wednesday during the second round of the Dodge/Bob Estes Abilene Junior to bring his two-day total to a 4-under-par 140. In the Girls Division, Julia Thead of Poway, Calif., takes a two-shot lead into Thursday's final round after finishing with a 6-over-par, two-day total of 150.

Conducted by the AJGA, the Dodge/Bob Estes Abilene Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at the Abilene Country Club β€” Fairway Course. The 120-player field features players from 15 states and Mexico. The course is being played at 7,007 yards for the Boys Division and 6,012 yards for the Girls Division.

Thorseth continued to rely on his consistent play throughout Wednesday's windy round as he made 15 pars, two birdies and only one bogey.

β€œIt was a lot tougher out there today,” Thorseth said. β€œThe wind and the rough both caused some problems. Birdies are hard to come by and I will just have to grind it out one shot at a time tomorrow.”

Brock Wilson of Beaumont, Texas, is in second place with a 2-under-par, two-day total of 142. Matthew Vela of San Antonio and Brian Dwyer of Southlake, Texas are tied for third with totals of 144. Diego Castilla of Monterrey, Mexico, Andrew Green of Edmond, Okla., and Clark Collier of Edmond, Okla., are tied for fifth place with tournament-total 147s.

As for the Girls Division, while Thead had only one birdie in her 6-over-par round of 78, she was still able to move ahead of the field and enters Thursday as the Girls Division leader. Her attitude going into tomorrow, however, will not change.

β€œEach round, I try to play the best round and not worry about what anybody else does,” Thead said. β€œI just try to hit good shots and not worry about the score.”

Heather Smith of Fort Worth, Texas, has sole possession of second place going into tomorrow with a tournament total of 152. Noelle Zavaleta of Lakewood, Calif., and Jordan Rhodes of San Antonio are tied for third with tournament totals of 153.
