MAYO CHARGES TO FIVE-STROKE LEAD WITH SECOND CONSECUTIVE 68
Maggio also shoots 68 to lead Girls Division

SAN ANTONIO — Robert Mayo of Austin, Texas, carded his second consecutive 4-under-par 68 to expand his lead to five shots Wednesday in the Boys Division at the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout. In the Girls Division, Mary Michael Maggio of Conway, Ark., also shot a 4-under-par 68 to grab a seven-shot lead going into Thursday's final round.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at San Antonio Country Club. The 120-player field features players from 13 states, Washington D.C., and Mexico. The course is being played at 6,690 yards for the Boys Division and 6,070 yards for the Girls Division.

After shooting a 4-under-par 32 on the front nine, Mayo, who will be attending Davidson College next fall, scrambled on the back nine, but capped the round of 68 with a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 18. He said he will take the same approach that he has used all week into tomorrow's final round.

“It's just another day,” Mayo said. “I will just have to finish the race and enjoy what comes tomorrow. I've been here before and will stick to the same routine.”

Juan Pablo Hernandez of Mexico City, Mexico, fired a 1-under-par 71 on the way to a two-round total of 141 and is in sole possession of second place. Taylor Meadows of Boerne, Texas, and Christopher Walker of The Woodlands, Texas, are tied for third with tournament totals of 143. Broc Raymond of The Woodlands, Texas, Adam Wennerstrom of Austin, Texas, Ryan O'Rear of Salado, Texas, and Seth Stuart of Austin, Texas, round out the second-round top five with tournament totals of 144.

In the Girls Division, Maggio changed her entire mindset after a bogey on No. 1 and ended the day with seven birdies.

“It was all mental today,” Maggio said. “I got out of my own way, played golf and had fun. If you're not having fun out there, something's wrong. Every round you play, you learn something.”

Amy Ruengmateekhum of Garland, Texas, and Felicia Espericueta of Edinburg, Texas are tied for second place, seven shots back, with tournament totals of 151.
