Lustig, 14, said he came into the round trying to hit straight and to the greens. Birdies on Nos. 8, 12 and 13 helped put him atop the leaderboard.
“I played pretty solid and had a few fortunate bounces,” Lustig said. “I played this course for the last two years; it would be pretty special to have my first win for the AJGA.”
In the running for second place in the Boys Division are Zachary Herr of New Hope, Pa., Cameron Palmer of Gilbert, Ariz., Ryan Davis of Salem, Va., and Kyle Wilshire of Georgetown, Ky., firing 1-under-par 71s.
Feng, 12, said although she felt rushed coming into her round, she managed to pull it together during the front nine. Feng birdied Nos. 4, 8 and 16 for 1-under-par 35 on the front nine and 1-over-par 37 on the back nine.
“Tomorrow I want to improve on hitting more greens in regulation,” Feng said. “My putting will be most important.”
