Top finishers qualify for EFW's Defense For America Classic

FORT WORTH, Texas —  Philip Colwell of The Woodlands, Texas, Brandon Liu of St. Albans, Mo., and Karsten Majors of Bixby, Okla., all shot 1-under-par 71s to earn medalist honors Monday at the EFW's Defense For America Classic Srixon Qualifier. Jiye Chun of Frisco, Texas, also carded a 1-under-par 71 to take honors in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the EFW's Defense For America Classic Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole, stroke play, shotgun start event held at Southern Oaks Golf Club.

The 85-player field featured juniors from 9 states. The course was played at 6,984 yards for the Boys Division and 5,963 yards for the Girls Division.

This was Majors' first American Junior Golf Association event. He discussed attributes of the course, a new location for AJGA play, which he hopes to adjust his game toward going into the tournament rounds.

“I'm not used to playing on these Bermuda greens,” Majors said. “Something about the grain makes them much harder for me to read.”

Liu and Colwell both chose to take an AJGA Performance Based Entry Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

Also taking tournament exemptions were Texas natives Alec Bruney of Nederland, Blake Wilson of League City, Jeffrey Juillerat of Tyler and Tim Mitchell of Austin.

Eight additional players qualified to play in this week's EFW's Defense For America Classic. One stroke behind the leaders, Kort O'Leary of Waco, Texas, posted an even-par 72. Greg O'Connor of Edmond, Okla., Drue Thompson of Granbury, Texas, and Eric Knight of Dallas all shot 1-over-par 73s. Rounding out those to qualify for the tournament were Kyle Lewis of Shawnee, Okla., Brian Smith of Corpus Christi, Texas, Taylor Wilson of Tulsa, Okla., and Gregory Yates of Mansfield, Texas, all carding 3-over-par 75s.

In the Girls Division, this was Chun's AJGA debut as well as her first junior golf event in the United States.

“I played a little better than usual for myself,” Chun, moving to the U.S. from Korea one month ago, said. “The course was in good repair and I'm excited to have played so well in my first event.”

Chun took a tournament exemption in lieu of playing, having to return to school this week.

Qualifying for the Girls Division, all hailing from the Lone Star state, were Alexandra Hopson of Laredo, Christine Lin of Austin, Megan Rosenfeld of Plano, and Carly Dear of Red Oak.
