PRICE AND SILCHUCK SPLIT MEDALIST HONORS IN SRIXON QUALIFIER
Swinehart wins medalist honors in Girls Division at Bellefonte Country Club
Ashland, Ky. Brooks Price of Worthington, Ohio, and Alec Silchuck of Franklin, Ky., tied for medalist honors in the Srixon Qualifier for the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior after carding 1-over-par 71s in the Boys Division at Bellefonte Country Club Monday. Samantha Swinehart of Lancaster, Ohio, won medalist honors in the Girls Division after recording a 5-over-par 75.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole shotgun held at Bellefonte Country Club. The tournament field consisted of 76 players, 72 boys and four girls, from 13 states. The Boys Division played from 6,049 yards and the Girls Division from 5,652 yards.
Price double-bogeyed No. 6, his second hole of the day, but battled back with birdies on Nos. 9 and 13 to get back to even. From there Price said he was able to grind it out the rest of the way.
It's a real good score for me, especially here, Price said. It's playing really tight with sneaky, fast greens.
Silchuck used his short game, hitting some key putts and being able to get up and down for par several times, which really helped him with his game.
I felt pretty good about today. I couldn't hit a fairway, but my putting was pretty good, Silchuck said. I feel really good about my game right now; about the only thing I need to work on is driving accuracy.
Price and Silchuck both opted to take an AJGA Performance Based Entry Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event. Kirk Moats of Louisville, Ky., Tyler Smith of Brentwood, Tenn., and Allan Day of Midlothian, Va., also opted out of this week's event.
Eight other players in the Boys Division earning spots in this week's NRP Bluegrass Junior through the Srixon Qualifier were JP Newsome of Robinson Creek, Ky., Nathaniel Johnson of Nicholasville, Ky., Matthew Burkhart of Lancaster, Pa., Jared Flanery of Sandy Hook, Ky., Benjamin Simpson of Lexington, Ky., Dustin Denzik of La Grange, Ky., Taylor Stevenson of Port Orange, Fla., and Tommy Armour IV of Cincinnati.
In the Girls Division, Swinehart felt good about her round and learned the importance of hitting it in the fairway, on what she considers a very tight course. Swinehart also said felt comfortable on the greens and used that to her advantage.
I thought the greens were slow my practice round, but they mowed them and they seemed good today, Swinehart said. They weren't too slow or too fast, they were just right.
Stacy Kim of Yorba Linda, Calif. also qualified in the Girls Division with a 7-over-par 77.
