Greensboro, N.C. • June 11 - 15
UIHLEIN EDGES AHEAD TO FINISH AT
9-UNDER-PAR 279 FOR WIN AT FOOTJOY BOYS INVITATIONAL
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the sixth-annual FootJoy Boys Invitational was a 72-hole stroke play event held at Forest Oaks Country Club. The 99-player field featured players from 24 states and seven countries. The course played at 7,280 yards. Past champions of this event include Seung-Su Han, Brian Harman, Daniel Woltman and Andrew Yun.
Uihlein, the 2005 Rolex Junior Player of the Year, finished second at this event in 2006. He began the day in second place, despite taking a 10 on No. 9 during his first round. By the time Uihlein made the turn, his putting had put him at an even-par 36.
“I didn’t make any mistakes in the last three rounds, and I got up and down a lot,” Uihlein said. “My putting was real clutch when I needed it.”
On the back nine, the 17-year-old birdied Nos. 13 and 15 to move up to first place. He then saved par on No. 18 after a tee shot into the rough, directly behind a lengthy plot of fescue grass.
“It feels good to finally win [an Invitational] once, but I had to make a 10 to do it,” Uihlein continued. “So if that’s what it takes, I might as well make a 10 every time. I’ve come close so many times. I figured that if I just stuck at it, then breaks would just start going my way.”
Sanders finished one shot off the lead after hitting his approach shot on No. 18 into the greenside bunker. When his bunker shot landed on the collar of the green, Sanders missed a chip in for par and bogeyed the hole to ultimately finish second.
