PORTER EDGES BOYS DIVISION TO TAKE TOP HONORS AT WINDSTONE GOLF CLUB
Kim claims medalist honors in Girls Division

RINGGOLD, Ga. — Matthew Porter of Cortland, N.Y., earned medalist honors after he carded a 3-under-par 67 in the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic Srixon Qualifier Series Sunday in the Boys Division. Joy Kim of Duluth, Ga., shot a 2-over-par 72 in the Girls Division to take home medalist honors.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic Srixon Qualifier was held at WindStone Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 81 players from 19 states. The Boys Division was played at 6,345 yards and the Girls Division at 5,667 yards.

Porter said he missed a lot of good putts today, but still carded six birdies to help put him in the lead.

“I never made a big number and I tried to avoid bogeys,” Porter said. “I was solid today; it was the best I have hit.”

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Hayden Anderson of Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Motz of Alpharetta, Ga., Alan Boutwell of Birmingham, Ala., Colin Chapman of Franklin, N.C., Gabe Hyde of Hoover, Ala., Finley Ewing IV of Dallas, Ryan Thornton of Chattanooga, Tenn., Dylan Healey of Rio Rancho, N.M., Blaine Woodruff of Acworth, Ga., Tanner Farr of Kennesaw, Ga., William Meason III of Alpharetta, Ga., Austin Barreras of Peachtree City, Ga., and Daniel Forrest of Marietta, Ga.

Porter, Motz, Boutwell, Chapman, Thornton, Healey, Woodruff, Meason and Barreras all opted to take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

Kim, who has signed a letter of intent with the University of Virginia and ranked 50th in the Polo Golf Rankings, said she played a solid game on the greens and carded three birdies.

“I knew I had a good chance coming into today as long as I played my own game,” Kim said. “I played the course last year and knew I had to aim for even par or under to be good.”

In the Girls Division qualifiers were Yugene Lee of Athens, Ga., Kristen Hagan of Charlotte, N.C., Leigh Henderson of Knoxville, Tenn., Alice Choi of Whitestone, N.Y.

Lee and Hagan elected to opt out and take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's tournament.
