EAGLE ON NO. 16 HELPS PULL GRAY INTO LEAD AT MYSTIC DUNES
Four players tied for second at even-par 71
CELEBRATION, Fla. — Mitchell Gray of Florence, S.C., leads heading into the final round of the Medicus Preseason Junior at Mystic Dunes in Celebration, Fla., after an opening-round 1-under-par 70.
With inclement weather forecasted for the Orlando area Sunday, the Tournament Committee decided that Sunday's final-round will be changed to a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start in the hopes of completing the event.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Mystic Dunes is a 36-hole stroke play event being held at Mystic Dunes Golf Club. The 83-player field features players from 18 states and Poland. The par-71 course is playing at 6,701 yards.
Consistency was the key for the 16-year-old Gray who carded seven pars, one birdie and one bogey on the front nine. After making pars on Nos. 10-15, Gray eagled No. 16 to take the lead.
“I put the ball in the right spot today,” Gray said. “I didn't get in any trouble off the tee.”
Gray leads the tournament by one stroke heading into Sunday's final round. He said he may have hit it well off the tee today, but still wanted to work on his short game.
“I'm going to work on my lag putting this afternoon,” Gray said. “There are some odd places to hit on these greens.”
Mateusz Jedrzejczyk of Warsaw, Poland, Ian McConnell of Riverview, Fla., and Andrew Tursky of Hillsborough, N.J., are tied for second after rounds of even-par 71. Chase Sargent of Orlando is in fifth place with a round of 1-over-par 72.
