MUMFORD NOTCHES FIRST AJGA VICTORY WITH A 2-UNDER-PAR 70
Weather conditions shorten Medicus Preseason Junior at Tapatio Springs

BOERNE, Texas — Despite cold, unseasonable conditions, Mark Mumford of Rye, N.Y., shot a 2-under-par 70 at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Tapatio Springs Sunday to win by two strokes. It is only his second American Junior Golf Association appearance and the first win of his AJGA career.

Conducted by the AJGA, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Tapatio Springs was an 18-hole stroke play shotgun event held at Tapatio Springs Resort & Conference Center. The first round was cancelled due to freezing temperatures and sleet. The 83-player field featured players from 21 states, Australia, Canada, Indonesia and Mexico. The course played at 6,343 yards.

Mumford said he did not let the cold temperatures bother his game. He shot consistently, carding a 34 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine to win the tournament.

“It's hard to play when you can't feel your hands,” Mumford said. “But it warmed up so it was okay.”

Mumford said No. 8, his fourth hole of the day, was key for him. He hit a 20-foot putt for par, and went on to birdie the next three out of four holes. Mumford was even-par through 11 holes and said his game felt good coming down the stretch, so the win was not much of a surprise.

“The AJGA tournaments are the biggest tournaments so it feels good to win this kind of event,” Mumford said.

Stanton Tondre of Castroville, Texas, Austen Hyde of Missouri City, Texas, and Peyton Vitter of New Orleans, La., tied for second with even-par 72s. Robert Davis of San Antonio and Joe Webber of Sandy, Utah, tied for fifth, carding 1-over-par 73s. Also of note, John Alvarez II of San Antonio made a hole-in-one on No. 11.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of more than 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 25 foreign countries.

Medicus Golf and The Medicus Golf Institute are dedicated to enabling all golfers to “Live Their Vision” in reaching their potential. By expanding its corporate vision, mission, products and services, Medicus Golf will enable golfers to learn and grow — both as a person and as a player — in a series of new and exciting developmental formats.

Medicus Golf enters its second year of sponsorship of the AJGA by supporting the Medicus Preseason Series. The Medicus Learning System, a comprehensive series of golf training aids, is dedicated to assisting golfers of all ages.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.
