CHANDLER, ARIZ., NATIVE LEE TAKES LEAD AT REBATH HEATHER FARR CLASSIC
Morris jumps to the front of the pack at Longbow Golf Club

MESA, Ariz.  β€” After shooting an opening round 7-under-par 64, Richard Lee of Chandler, Ariz., took hold of the Boys Division lead at the ReBath Heather Farr Classic. His round was good enough for a three-stroke lead. In the Girls Division, Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., went low, shooting a 3-under-par 68. She holds a one-shot lead over defending champion Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the ReBath Heather Farr Classic is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 90 boys and 42 girls β€” ages 12-18 β€” from 17 states, Canada, the Cayman Islands and Mexico. The ninth annual event is being staged on the par-71, 6,999-yard Longbow Golf Club (Girls Division played at 6,146 yards). Past champions of the event include Hunter Mahan (1999), Philip Francis (2006), Amanda Blumenherst (2002) and Paula Creamer (2003, 2004).

Lee's standout round was one shot off the tournament record set at the event in 2006. His round included seven birdies and no bogeys. The sophomore from Hamilton High School also had only 25 putts for the round.

β€œI felt good today. I hit the ball really good,” Lee stated. β€œI made putts. I missed a couple I wanted to make but it was alright because I had a good round.”

Taylor Travis of Fremont, Calif., and Scott Pinckney of Anthem, Ariz., both finished tied for second after carding 4-under-par 67s.Rounding out the top five in the Boys Division are Stephen Carney of Tulsa, Okla., and Alex Kang of Oak Park, Calif. Both boys shot 3-under-par 68s to finish tied for fourth.

In the Girls Division, Morris knew coming into this event that she would need to shoot near par in order to be a contender in this event. She did even better than that after carding three birdies, including one on No. 10, her first hole of the day.

β€œI felt really comfortable over my putts today,” said the 15-year-old Morris. β€œThe wind starting picking up a little this afternoon, but the round played very similar to the practice round so that was nice.”

Harigae also had a good first round, finishing just one shot off the lead in second with a 69 that included an eagle on her final hole of the day. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division are Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., who sits tied for second with a 2-under-par 69.
