PECK, LONG TIED FOR LEAD AT LOCKTON/CAPITOL FEDERAL KANSAS CITY JUNIOR
Ramos leads Girls Division by five

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. β€” Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash., and Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., shot 69 and 68 respectively to become co-leaders of the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior. Margarita Ramos of Paradise Valley, Ariz., also stayed on top of the Girls Division on Wednesday after a 74.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior is being held at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. The tournament is a 54-hole stroke play event that hosts a field of 99 players. Twenty-one states are represented in the field that consists of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12 β€” 18.

Peck picked up right where he left off from the first round by firing a 2-under par 69 for the second round. After two consecutive rounds in the 60s, Peck said the course lays out well for him.

β€œThis course fits my game well,” Peck said. β€œI am able to put the ball out there. I usually hit wedges in to the green.”

Peck had a roller-coaster round that included six birdies on Nos. 3, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15. He said going into the final round he just needs to focus on his game.

β€œI've shot well so far,” Peck said. β€œIt has given me confidence, and I just need to shoot good again.”

Long, 16, played consistent golf after consecutive 68s to move to a tournament total 6-under par 136 despite what he said were more difficult conditions.

β€œThe course played more difficult today,” Long said. β€œIt was a little windy, but I hit the ball a lot more solid.”

Three shots behind Peck and Long is Jordan Lewis of Marion, Ill., at 139.

Tied for fourth place are Ty Spinella of Aledo, Texas, Mark Johnson of Tulsa, Okla., Michael Garden of St. Albans, Mo., and Samuel Chavez of Hillsborough, Calif., all four shots back at 140.

In the Girls Division, Ramos had trouble getting anything going until a chip in for birdie on No. 7 put her at one-under par for the front nine.

β€œI wasn't making putts,” Ramos said. β€œI did not hit a lot of fairways on the back nine and putting was more difficult.”

Ramos finished with a 74 to put her at one-over par 143 for the tournament.

Kayley Kempton of Littleton, Colo., stands in second place at 148 for the tournament, and Amber Hensley of Tulsa, Okla., moved to third place at an even-par round of 71 to go to a tournament total of 150.
