RAMOS BREAKS GIRLS COURSE RECORD AT LOCKTON/CAPITOL FEDERAL KANSAS CITY JUNIOR
Peck holds one-shot lead in Boys Division

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Margarita Ramos of Paradise Valley, Ariz., came into the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior in the right frame of mind, firing a 2-under par 69, breaking the Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club's competitive course record for women and giving herself a 7-shot lead after the first round. Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash., leads the Boys Division following a 4-under-par 67 Tuesday.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior is being held at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. The tournament is a 54-hole stroke play event that hosts a field of 99 players. Twenty-one states are represented in the field that consists of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12 — 18.

Ramos, 16, comes into the tournament fresh off of qualifying for the Corona Morelia Championship, the LPGA event that will be held in Mexico in October. With that in mind, Ramos was able to play what she said was a solid round Tuesday morning.

“I putted well,” Ramos said. “My average putt was about 10 feet.”

She said her driving was efficient and she was able to place the ball where she needed.

“The distance I left for my second shots was perfect,” she said.

Due to the LPGA qualifier, Ramos did not arrive at the course until late Monday afternoon. She was only able to play the front nine in her practice round, however, she still shot 3-under-par on the back nine after birdies on Nos. 10, 16 and 17.

Following Ramos in a tie for second place are Kayley Kempton of Littleton, Colo., Rebecca Lederhausen of Hinsdale, Ill., and Sarah Beth Davis of Victoria, Texas, all at 76.

In the Boys Division, Peck, 15, gathered momentum early with a birdie on No. 1.

“I stuck a pitching wedge to five feet from the hole,” Peck said. “I converted the putt for a birdie and carried the momentum throughout the day.”

Peck said he gave himself multiple chances for birdies all day with his iron play, but that he will work on his fairway woods and long irons for Wednesday.

“They did not work for me on the back nine,” he said. “You have to keep out of trouble on this course.”

In second place in the Boys Division is Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., at 68. In a four-way tie for third place are Michael Garden of St. Albans, Mo., Austin Quinten of Sand Springs, Okla., Kyle English of Bloomington, Ill., and Tim Madigan of Rio Rancho, N.M., at 69.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest Association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins.
