DAVIS, SANDHU GRAB FIRST-ROUND LEAD AT FRENCH CREEK GOLF CLUB
Solberg tops Girls Division with 1-under-par 69

ELVERSON, Pa.β€” After a sweltering first round of the CorseMax/Philidelphia Runner Junior Tuesday, Amory Davis of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Ajeetesh Sandhu of Bradenton, Fla., are tied for the lead in the Boys Division at 2-under-par 69. Lindsey Solberg of Verona, Wis., carded a 1-under-par 69 to top the Girls Division by two strokes.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior is a 54-hole stroke-play competition featuring 95 boys and girls from 21 states at French Creek Golf Club. The Boys Division plays to a par-71 6,538 yards, while the Girls Division plays to a par-70 5,248 yards.

In the Boys Division, Sandhu, 17, capitalized on strong iron play to secure his sub-par round.

β€œI was not hitting it as far off the tee, but my distance control with my irons was good,” Sandhu said. β€œOn No. 10, the par-3, I hit my tee shot to a foot and sunk the putt for birdie.”

Davis, who finished second at the Bridgestone Golf Junior Classic in April, attributed his success to his accurate approach shots and his putter.

β€œI hit a lot of solid shots to the middle of the green,” Davis said. β€œI gave myself a lot of 15-foot putts and made a lot of good pars.”

Davis also carded an eagle on No. 11 after sinking a 35-foot putt from the fringe to go to 2-under-par.

Chris Rockwell of Owings Mills, Md., Sean Brannan of Hollidaysburg, Pa., and Jeffrey Chen of Walnut, Calif., are tied for third at 1-under-par 70.

In the Girls Division, Solberg hit 10 of 13 fairways on her way to taking the first-round lead.

β€œBy hitting the fairway, I took any trouble out of play,” Solberg said. β€œIf I can keep it straight, I will be able to play my game.”

Andrea Watts of Lone Tree, Colo., is in second with a 71, and Katie Conway of Wading River, N.Y., stands in third with a 74.
