BROWN STAYS ON TOP AT NIKE GOLF JUNIOR AT TOFTREES
Javed holds 2-shot lead in Boys Division

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. β€” Sarah Brown of Stewartsville, N.J., picked up right where she left off, leading the Nike Golf Junior at Toftrees after shooting a two-round score of 72 β€” 73 β€” 145 keeping her two shots from the field in the Girls Division. In the Boys Division, Aidan Javed of Liberty Township, Ohio, moved to a 2-over-par 146 to take a 2-shot lead.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Nike Golf Junior at Toftrees is a 54-hole stroke play tournament that hosts a 98-player field. Mexico, Canada and 23 states are represented in the field of 75 boys and 23 girls, age 12 β€” 15.

The Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series is a collection of 10 events specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12 β€” 15 years old. The competition provides an opportunity for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into open tournaments. The series concludes with an invitation-only Nike Golf Junior Championship, Sept.1 β€” 3, 2006 in Aurora, Ore.

Brown said she played more consistent Wednesday, carding 15 pars on the day.

β€œI missed a lot of birdie opportunities and was disappointed by that,” Brown said. β€œI birdied No. 14, which gave me confidence the rest of the way.”

Brown said she drove the ball better Wednesday, and wants to just continue to play the same way she has been thus far.

β€œTomorrow, I just want to shoot par, make two-putts on every green and come in with 72,” Brown said.

Veronica Valerio of Temecula, Calif., is within two shots of Brown after low-round 71 to put her at a tournament total, 147. In third place is Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, Tenn., at 150.

In the Boys Division, Javed, 15, started off his round with seven straight pars before recording his first birdie of the day.

β€œI was hitting greens and two-putting,” Javed said. β€œI was able to get up and down for pars.”

Javed said his putting let him down on the back nine, and he plans to work on it leading into the final round.

β€œI need to improve in the 3 β€” 5 foot range so I don't miss any tomorrow,” Javed said.

In second place two shots back of Javed is Will Ovenden of Spartanburg, S.C., who shot a low-round 71 to go to a tournament total of 148. Tied for third place are first-round co-leader Gene Yang of East Brunswick, N.J., and Bradley Kushner of Mendham, N.J., at 149. Tied for fifth place are Ryan Gay of Gardiner, Maine, and Adam Saban of Lockport, Ill., at 150.
