MITZEL FIRES SIX BIRDIES TO CLAIM MEDALIST HONORS AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
Seven juniors qualify for the Pacific Northwest International Junior presented by Jeff Troesch

SPANAWAY, Wash. — Although weather conditions at Classic Golf Club were overcast most of Sunday afternoon, Paul Mitzel of Mercer Island, Wash., lit up the course with a 35-34—69 to take medalist honors.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Pacific Northwest International Junior presented by Jeff Troesch Srixon Qualifier was held at Classic Golf Club. Fifty-nine boys ages 12-18, from six states and Canada, each competed for a chance to play in the Pacific Northwest International Junior presented by Jeff Troesch that will take place from June 19-22 at Trophy Lake Golf and Casting.

The medalist honor was a first for Mitzel and he jumped at the chance to play in the upcoming tournament.

“I've been to a couple qualifiers, but I haven't played good enough to be in the tournament,” he said. “So this feels awesome.”

Mitzel boasted six birdies with four falling on the back nine. The 16-year-old was quick to mention his putting, which he focused on before the Qualifier.

“Short game is half your game so if you can excel in that you can shoot pretty low,” Mitzel said. “My goal was no three putts, and I didn't have one.”

Glen Scher of Agoura Hills, Calif., had a shining moment when he scored a hole-in-one on the par 3, 180 yard No. 4.

There were seven juniors to qualify for the Pacific Northwest International Junior presented by Jeff Troesch. With 1-under-par 71s were Jarred Bossio of Olympia, Wash., and Alex Kang of Oak Park, Calif. Bossio opted to take a tournament exemption instead of playing in the tournament. Finishing with even-par 72s were Stefan Richardson of Reaton, Wash., and Zachary Baker of Scottsdale, Ariz. Other qualifiers with matching 73s, were Joon Heui Lee of Langley, B.C., Nick Ellis of Sammamish, Wash., and Scott Tsuchiyama of Bellevue, Wash.
