Na finishes on top of Girls Division

RINGGOLD, Ga.Patrick Lovely and Ye Jin Na, both of Lawrenceville, Ga., claimed medalist honors at the Srixon Qualifier for the Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic on Sunday.

Lovely fired a 4-under-par 66 and Na shot a 73 to finish 3-over-par to lead all qualifiers for the tournament that begins Tuesday.

The Srixon Qualifier is an 18-hole event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association. It was held at WindStone Golf Club, playing at par 70 and featured 68 boys and 14 girls, ages 12-18, from 12 states.

After a one hour, 54 minute weather delay, the round was barely completed by nightfall.

Lovely said he was happy with his overall round afterward.

“I think I only missed one fairway,” Lovely said. “I hit off the tee well, which is the biggest thing on this course.”

Although he shot the low round of the day, Lovely still found parts of his game that needed work.

“I need to work on the speed of the greens,” he said. “They were quick.”

Na was also able to put together a solid round.

“I played well off the tee,” Na said. “I was able to rely on the driver.”

Both players had to deal with the long delay. While Lovely said he stayed loose during the interruption, Na said she was nervous but determined not to let it bother her.

Lee Bedford of Cary, N.C., who was the only other player to shoot under par, scored a 1-under-par 69 and qualified for the tournament. Also qualifying in the Boys Division were: Cory Siegfried of Wayne, Pa., at even-par 70; Martin Tilson, III of Atlanta, Ga., Nicklaus Ward of Fayetteville, Ga., Michael West of Huntersville, N.C., Dustin Gosser of Russell Springs, Ky., and Rob Campbell of Nashville, Tenn., at 72; Blair Marshall of Chattanooga, Tenn., Will Lewallen of Clarkesville, Ga., Robert McRae of Augusta, Ga., Darren Chapman of Destin, Fla., and David Haley of Hilliard, Ohio, at 73. Tilson, Gosser, Campbell, Lewallen, McRae Chapman and Hilliard all elected to opt out and take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week’s event, allowing players who shot 74 into the tournament.

Qualifying behind Na were Emilie Burger of Hoschton, Ga., and Brianna Seo of Wesley Chapel, Fla., at 76; Leigh Henderson of Knoxville, Tenn., at 79; and Emily Bachert of Bowling Green, Ky., at 81.
