FLORIDA DUO LEAD AT MIZUNO JUNIOR AT CHATEAU ELAN
Palm, Hurst each enter second round with one-shot lead

BRASELTON, Ga. — David Palm of Jacksonville, Fla., fired a 2-under-par 69 to grab the early Boys Division lead at the Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan. In the Girls Division, Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., carded an even-par 71 to sit alone atop the leaderboard.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Mizuno Junior at Chateau Elan is a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 93 boys and 42 girls — ages 12-18 — from 21 states and Canada. The 13th annual event is being staged on the par-71, 7,071-yard Chateau Course (Girls Division played at 6,069 yards) at Chateau Elan Resort. Past champions of the event and current PGA and LPGA players include Charles Howell III, Ryuji Imada, Beth Bauer and Brittany Lincicome.

Palm used solid iron play to get off to a fast start, hitting his approach shots on holes No. 1 and 4 to inside six feet and converting the short birdie chances.

“I've been working on my irons really hard lately and they clicked today,” Palm said. “I hit my irons closer than I had in awhile and was able to make some putts.”

After making the turn at 1-under-par, Palm drained consecutive 20-foot birdie putts to start the back nine before chipping in from behind the green on No. 12 to move to 4-under-par on the day. Two late bogeys cut Palm's lead to one shot heading into Saturday's second round.

Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach, Va., William Miller of Venetia, Pa., and Hunter Slatton of Tuscaloosa, Ala., each sit a shot back at 1-under-par 70.

Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, Fla., Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery, Ala., Gregor Slabe of Bradenton, Fla., and Adam McDonald of Franklin, Ky., are tied for fifth at even par.

Hurst, who won the AJGA's 2005 Nike Golf Junior at Fort Myers, birdied two of three par 5s on the course en route to an even-par round and the Girls Division lead.

“I hit my driver really well and my approach shots were good — attacking every pin,” Hurst said. “But I didn't putt well today. I only had two birdies out of the 10 that I could have had.”

Megan Grehan of Mamaroneck, N.Y., is alone in second after a 1-over-par 72. Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass., and Calle Nielson of Nashville, Tenn., each shot 73 to round out the top four.
