NEW YORKERS DEFOREST, GREHAN WIN THE LINCOLN MERCURY JUNIOR AT CANOE BROOK
Grehan claims second AJGA victory in sudden-death playoff

SUMMIT, N.J. β€”  Megan Grehan of Mamaroneck, N.Y., won The Lincoln Mercury Junior at Canoe Brook over Michelle Grilli of Lutherville, Md., while Christopher DeForest of Cottikill, N.Y., held on to a late two-stroke lead over Peter Uihlein of Bradenton, Fla., to win the Boys Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, The Lincoln Mercury Junior at Canoe Brook was held at the Canoe Brook Country Club β€” North Course. Eighty-five junior golfers from 13 states, Ontario and China, including 22 from New Jersey, competed in the 54-hole stroke play event.

Grehan's previous AJGA victory came at this tournament in 2003.

β€œI really wanted to win because I finished second in five or six AJGA tournaments,” she said.

Heading into the par-5 No. 18, Grehan and Grilli were tied at 6-over-par. Each had long putts for birdie, then tap-ins for par, forcing a sudden-death playoff at 6-over-par 222 on the par-4 No. 1. Grehan crushed a 250-yard drive to the right of the No. 1 fairway leaving her with an approach of less than 100 yards. Grehan made par, while Grilli bogeyed, giving Grehan the win.

β€œI was just putting really well today,” she said. β€œMy putter really came through today.”

Angela Oh of Maple Shade, N.J., was third in the Girls Division after a 5-over-par 77 in the final round, bringing her to a tournament total of 225.

In the Boys Division, DeForest had a two-stroke cushion over Uihlein heading into No. 18. Uihlein would not make it easy for DeForest β€” he bombed a 359-yard drive on the 600-yard par-5. DeForest said he was not trying to play aggressively for the win on No. 18.

β€œI just tried to play it safe,” DeForest said. β€œAfter that drive, I thought I was going to have to make a birdie to win.”

As it turned out, both made par on No. 18, giving DeForest his first AJGA win with a 3-under-par 213 tournament total.

β€œThe whole day was a highlight,” DeForest said. β€œI just did as well as I could, and today it was enough.”

Uihlein finished two strokes behind the lead with a 1-under-par 215. Mu Hu of Shen Zhen, China, was third with a tournament total of 3-over-par 219. In fourth place was Samuel Kim of Cerritos, Calif., with a 221 three-day total. Conor O'Brien of Weatogue, Conn., tied for fifth with Andy Choi of Orlando, Fla., at 7-over-par 223.
