MURPHY FIRES 3-UNDER-PAR 68 TO LEAD BY 2 AT THE MEMORIAL JUNIOR
White leads Girls Division at even- par

DELAWARE, Ohio- Tanner Murphy of Columbus, Ohio, fired a 3-under-par 68 to take a two-shot lead over the closely stacked Boys Division at the Memorial Junior Championship presented by Wendy's and Discover Card. Allie White of Lancaster, Ohio, leads the Girls Division by two strokes after carding an even-par 71.

The Memorial Junior Championship presented by Wendy's and Discover Card, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 78 boys and 21 girls — ages 12 to 18 — from 18 states. Dornoch Golf Club is hosting the second-year event for the first time.

Carding birdies on three out of four holes on the back-nine, Murphy was able to stay under par by consistent ball striking and clutch putting.

“My short irons were really hitting close to the green,” Murphy said. “I had to make par putts—they were really big.”

Columbus' own Murphy attributes his round to solid iron play and is looking for even more putts to fall in the second round to maintain his place atop the leaderboard.

“Tomorrow, I want to try to keep my lead and play my own game,” Murphy said, who leads for the first time at an AJGA event. “I still want to improve from today and make a few more putts.”

Firing four of the five sub-par rounds of the day, Lion Kim of Lake Mary, Fla., Kevin Lim of Stevenson Ranch, Calif., Doug Stadler of Wexford, Pa., and Bryan Blake of Westerville, Ohio, are tied for second at 1-under-par 70, two shots out of the lead.

In the Girls Division, White climbed to the lead position by using a string of pars and two birdies on the front-nine to position herself one-under going into the back nine, eventually carding four birdies on the day.

Hitting 11 fairways and 14 greens in regulation, 15-year-old White used her driver and irons to position her two shots ahead in the Girls Division.

Laura Nochta of Lancaster, Ohio, trails White at 2-over-par 73. Jennifer Cassidy of Dalton, Ga., Alexandra Lederhausen of Hinsdale, Ill., and Molly Fuhs of Spokane, Wash., are tied for third after carding 3-over-par 74.
