GALLETTI TAKES HOME TROPHY WITH FINAL ROUND 3-UNDER PAR 69
Ferrero shoots 2-under-par 70 to claim first AJGA victory
SAN RAMON, Calif. — Roberto Galletti, Jr., of Clayton, Calif., carded a final round 3-under-par 69 to take home the Boys Division trophy with a 3-under-par 213 tournament total at the Fidelity Investments Junior Open. Nicole Ferrero of Lodi, Calif., carded a 2-under par 70 to pull away with the Girls Division victory with a 10-over-par 226 tournament total.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Open was a 54-hole stroke play event held at the The Bridges Golf Club. The tournament featured 63 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 13 states and Canada.
Galletti, who captured his first AJGA open victory of the season and his third of his career, came out of the gates quickly tallying birdies on the first two holes. On the day, Galletti recorded 12 pars, three birdies and landed an eagle on the par-5 No. 10.
“Starting the round with two birdies was definitely a hot start, but I was set back with a bogey on No. 3,” Galletti said. “Only being 1-up on No. 10 added some pressure, but the eagle moved me to 3-up which allowed me to relax a bit.”
The eagle on No. 10 was the turning point in Galletti's round which adjusted his game plan for the final day.
“I did not want to be too aggressive so I tried to lie back and force them to do something spectacular,” 17-year-old Galletti said, who finished at 3-under-par, with rounds of 73-71-69—213.
Gregor Main of Danville, Calif., finished in a close second, one stroke behind Galletti with rounds of 74-71-69—214. Spencer Anderson of Pacific Palisades, Calif., finished third with an even-par 216 tournament total while Heejoo Son of Torrance, Calif., posted a final round 2-under-par 70 for a 1-over-par 217 tournament total for fourth place. Sean Maekawa, of Paauilo, Hawaii, carded a 76-70-73—219 to take fifth.
In the Girls Division, Ferrero claimed her first AJGA victory carding a 2-under-par 70 to set her atop the leaderboard at 10-over-par 75-81-70—226.
“Today my goal was to go out and play a good round,” Ferrero said. “I definitely exceeded my expectations.”
Throughout the day Ferrero played steady golf recording 10 pars and five birdies, but struggled on the back nine carding a 1-over-par 37.
“This whole tournament I have been playing well on the backside, and struggled on the front, but today it reversed,” the 16-year-old said. “I made a good par-save on No. 2, and then on Nos. 3 and 4, I stuck it within 12 feet to putt uphill for back-to-back birdies.”
Ki-Shui Liao of Alameda, Calif., finished in second with a 18-over-par 234 tournament total. Kylie Fuller of Temecula, Calif., carded a final-round 5-over-par 77 to tie for third with rounds of 81-78-77—236. Jennifer Bermingham of Long Beach, Calif., fired a final-round 3-over-par 75 for a 236 tournament total, to tie for third with Fuller.
