CAREER-LOW 65 GIVES WEBB THE LEAD AT COLONIAL
Braver is one stroke behind after 6-under-66

JACKSON, Miss. — Two boys had career days to open Tuesday's Nike Golf Junior at Colonial presented by Mississippi Farm Bureau. Daniel Webb, 15, of Tyler, Texas, shot a 7-under-par 65 to lead the Boys Division by one stroke. Sam Braver, 15, of Roswell, Ga., came in one stroke behind Webb, carding a career-low score of 66. Allie White, 15, of Lancaster, Ohio, bested the Girls Division with a first-round score of 1-over-par 73.

The Nike Golf Junior at Colonial presented by Mississippi Farm Bureau is a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Colonial Country Club on the Jackson Course. The 84-player field boasts juniors from 22 states and Canada. The Nike Golf Junior All-Star series allows players ages 12-15 to develop their skills and earn entry into other AJGA tournaments.

Webb, whose previous best round was 70, made seven birdies and 11 pars during his career round.

“I started getting nervous after I got it to 5-under on the 12th hole,” Webb said.

Despite the nerves, Webb birdied his final two holes to finish with the tournament lead.

“When you shoot 65, you really don't think too much,” Webb said.

Webb's round only gave him a 1-shot lead over Braver's 66, a score that bested his previous low round by two strokes.

Rounding out the top five in Tuesday's first round are Jhared Hack, 15, of Heathrow, Fla., Jordan McLaurin, 15, of Ironton, Mo., and Kevin Kring, 15, of Springfield, Mo., all with scores of 2-under-par 70.

White carded a birdie on No. 7, giving her a 1-under-par 35 going into the back nine before going 2-over to finish with 73. Putting and pitching are what White says helped make lots of pars and leave her at the top of the leader board.

“You get to play a lot of rounds in the Nike events,” said White. “It feels bigger, more important.”

This is the first time that White has led a Nike Golf Junior All-Star series event.

Close behind White are Whitney Wenglasz, 14, of Oldsmar, Fla., and Kate Durnan, 15, of Mendham, N.J., each carding a score of 2-over-par 74.
