DO LEADS GIRLS DIVISION BY SEVEN AFTER WINDY DAY IN WICHITA
Tway, Ward tied at the top of the boys' field at 1-under-par

WICHITA, Kan. — The wind picked up in Wichita Thursday, and along with increased gusts were increased scores for the leaders of the Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship at Crestview County Club. Brianna Do, 15, of Lakewood, Calif., shot an even-par 71 Thursday to open up a seven-shot lead in the Girls Division. Meanwhile, in the Boys Division it was Kevin Tway, 16, of Edmond, Okla., and Christopher Ward, 17, of McKinney, Texas, tied for the lead in the Boys Division at 1-under-par 141 after two days on Crestview's South Course.

The Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship is a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Crestview Country Club in Wichita. The 99-player field boasts juniors from 23 states and Canada. Six Rolex Junior All-Americans are participating in the tournament.

Do began play Wednesday with a 3-under-par 68 and, with 71 Thursday, extended her lead from five strokes to seven heading into Friday's final round. Do began her day by playing the first five holes at 2-over-par, but got back to even after getting adjusted to the windy conditions.

“It was a little tougher out there today,” Do said.

Do said good tee shots and solid putting have been the keys as she looks for her second AJGA win Friday.

“I'd be really excited to win,” Do said. “Who wouldn't be?”

MacKinzie Kline, 13, of Encinitas, Calif., is alone in second place after her even-par 71 Thursday left her with a tournament total of 146. Jennie Arseneault, 17, of Grinnell, Iowa, and Kristin Ingram, 18, of Pasadena, Calif., are tied for third place with tournament totals of 5-over-par 147.

In the Boys Division, Tway, the son of PGA Tour veteran Bob Tway, shot an even-par 71 to tie first-round leader Ward at 141. Tway said he limited mistakes during his round by concentrating on hitting fairways and greens.

“I'm hitting my irons really close when I'm in the fairway,” he said.

Ward, who shot 69 in Wednesday's first-round, struggled to a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine Thursday because of the wind, but recovered to shoot a 3-under-par 32 on the back side after getting used to the conditions. Ward said sleeping with a tie for the lead will not change his game plan for the final round.

“I've been in the situation before so I won't do anything different,” he said.

The leaders are one stroke ahead of Robert Laird, 17, of Tulsa, Okla., who shot a 1-under par 70 to finish with a two day total of 142. Tied for fourth place at 143 are David Yujin Chung, 15, of Fayetteville, N.C., Michael Lee, 16, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Zachary Cleland, 18, of Wichita.

The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The final round will begin Friday at 7:30 a.m. off the first tee at Crestview Country Club's South Course. For more information about the Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship, please contact tournament headquarters at (316) 733-2481 or visit the AJGA Web site at ajga.org.
