WICHITA'S CLELAND TIES FOR MEDALIST HONORS AT SRIXON QUALIFIER

Eights boys and four girls qualify for Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship

WICHITA, Kan. — Zach Cleland,18, of Wichita, Kan., tied for the low round of the day Monday at the Srixon Qualifier for the Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship, shooting an even-par 72 to earn co-medalist honors in the Boys Division with Tyler Coates, 16, of Durango, Colo.

The 18-hole event, part of the Srixon Qualifier Series, was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Auburn Hills Golf Course and featured 100 players representing 15 states.

Cleland said his winning score could have been even lower if more putts had dropped.

“Four or five times on the front nine I burned the edge,” said Cleland, who was tied at the top despite three-putting three times.

Coates said his goal was to stay around par to ensure that his score would be good enough to qualify.

“I didn't want to be a bubbler again,” he said.

Coates missed qualifying at the Srixon Qualifier for the AJGA's Heather Farr Classic in March by one stroke.

In the Girls Division, Sydney Sturdevant,16, of Sioux Falls, S.D., took medalist honors with a round of 3-over-par 75. Sturdevant, who attributed her low score to great putting, said she is looking forward to playing in the main event later this week.

“Now I have a lot of confidence,” she said.

Rounding out the field in the Boys Division with scores of 2-over-par 74 were Justin Yoder of Versailles, Mo., Erik Fernandez of Norman, Okla., Will Little of Jonesboro, Ark., Blake Giroux of Omaha, Neb., and Kyle Spencer of Sapulpa, Okla.

Other girls earning entry with their play Monday were Kayley Kempton of Littleton, Colo., with a 77, Ashley Lance of Franklin, Tenn, with an 83 and Rashelle Fetty of Enid, Okla., with an 84.

The Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship begins Wednesday at Crestview Country Club with a field of 72 boys and 27 girls from 23 states and Canada teeing it up.
