AJGA rookies capture titles in the Boys and Girls Divisions

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The final round of the Nike Golf Junior at Fort Myers was cancelled after inclement weather persisted through the morning, giving Mathieu Rivard of Granby, Quebec, the Boys Division title, while Vicky Hurst of Melbourne, Fla., won the Girls Division. Both players took home titles in their first-career AJGA tournaments.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Nike Golf Junior at Fort Myers is a 54-hole stroke play event that featured junior golfers from 13 states and two foreign countries, including 37 from the state of Florida.

Heavy rain and dangerous weather forced a three-hour delay before the tournament committee cancelled the final round. Tournament finishes were determined by players' 36-hole total scores.

Rivard shot 69-68-137 and finished the tournament at 7-under-par, one shot better than Tripp McCallister of Lake City, S.C.

“The win is pretty cool. It's my first tournament in the AJGA and one of my first in America, so this will give me more chances to play,” Rivard said.

Rivard played the par 5s at 7-under, including a first-round eagle, and used 11 birdies to propel him to his first win.

McCallister shot back-to-back rounds of 69 for a tournament total of 138 and second-place finish, while Alexander Sitompul of Bradenton, Fla., finished two shots behind Rivard at 70-69-139. Chase Wright of Muncie, Ind., shot 73-68 — 141 for a tie for fourth-place finish, while Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery, Ala., also tied for fourth.

Hurst followed an opening-round 76 with a 2-under-par 70 in the second round to win the Girls Division by two shots. Her 146 total was two shots better than Evan Jensen of Belleair, Fla., and three shots ahead of Lindy Duncan of Plantation, Fla. Jensen shot 73-75-148, while Duncan finished the tournament at 76-73 — 149.

With six birdies in her final round, Hurst pulled away from the field with a back-nine 34 in the second round, giving her the final two-shot cushion.
