AJGA SHELL WORLD GOLF VILLAGE JUNIOR
CHAMPIONSHIP
Slammer & Squire at World Golf Village
St. Augustine, Florida
July 23-26, 2001
CODE IN POSITION FOR
SIXTH AJGA TITLE
Miller takes three-shot
lead into final round
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Whitney Code
of Tampa, Fla., fired an even-par 72 to take the second
round lead in the Girls Division of the AJGA Shell World
Golf Village Junior Championship. Code has a two-day
total of 3-over-par 147 to lead Jessica Castle of Plantation,
Fla., by two shots. In the Boys Division, Zack Miller
of San Rafael, Calif., also holds a three-shot lead
with a two-day total of 5-under-par 139.
The Shell World Golf Village Junior Championship, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, features 84
junior golfers, ages 13-18, from 12 states. Included
in the field are 46 players from Florida.
Code, a Polo Golf Junior All-American, followed up
her first-round score of 3-over-par 75 with an even-par
72. Code had 14 pars, two birdies and two bogeys in
her round.
"I hit the ball much better today than I did in
the first round," Code said. "I just didn't
have as many bad shots, and I stayed away from big numbers."
Code played her opening nine, the back nine, in 1-under-par
35, carding a birdie on the par-3 15th. Following bogeys
on Nos. 4 and 7, she climbed back to even-par on her
round after a birdie on the par-5 8th hole. Code attested
her round could have been better, but she missed numerous
scoring chances.
"I didn't putt as well today. I hit close approaches,
but just couldn't get the putts to fall," Code
added. "I had a lot of greens in regulation (14-of-18),
so it was disappointing to not make more birdies."
The 18-year-old Code, a University of Florida signee,
is shooting for her sixth career AJGA title and second
this year after teaming with her sister, Mallory, to
win the Justin Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior
Team Championship.
"I'll be happy if I can hit the ball tomorrow
the way I did today," Code said. "If I can
also make some putts, it should be a good final round."
Code leads Castle by two shots. Castle has posted rounds
of 75-74 for a two-day total of 149. Brandy Andersen,
the first-round leader, is in third place with two-day
total of 150.
In the Boys Division, Miller takes a three-shot lead
into Thursday's final round. The 17-year-old posted
his second consecutive under-par round with a 3-under-par
69 after Tuesday's 70 in the first round.
"I hit much better approach shots today than in
the first round," Miller said. "I didn't make
many great putts, but made the ones I should have."
Miller's round was highlighted by an eagle on his second
hole, the par-5 11th, after sticking a 4-iron 10 feet
from the hole. He then birdied three par-4s on the front
nine to come in with nines of 33-36. He has played the
par-5s in 6-under-par through the first two rounds.
"I played very steady with the exception of No.
18 (a double bogey)," Miller added. "I hit
my drive into the water and missed a 4-footer for bogey.
That kind of dampened my round."
Miller's best AJGA finish is a fourth-place showing
in last year's IZZO/Compaq Junior Championship in Nisswa,
Minn. He hopes he can keep it going in the final round.
"I'm hitting the ball good and putting great,"
Miller commented. "If I stick to my game plan and
keep the ball in the fairway, I should fare pretty well
tomorrow."
Chris Kirk of Woodstock, Ga., is in second place with
a 2-under-par 142 on rounds of 70-72. Hochul Kim (69-75)
of Clearwater, Fla., Joe Morton (72-72) of Waycross,
Ga., and Brian Harman (73-71) of Savannah, Ga., are
tied for third at even-par 144.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with tee times running
from 7:30-9:27 a.m. off Nos. 1 and 10 tees. For more
