FOURTEEN PLAYERS QUALIFY FOR NEXT
WEEK'S PRESTIGIOUS EVENT Lue paces Girls Division; Hestley leads the Boys
KATY, Texas - Fourteen players earned spots
in next weekend's AJGA TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior
at Whispering Pines Sunday via two qualifiers held Sunday.
Stephanie Lue of Houston earned medalist honors in the
Girls Division with a 1-under 71 in the morning and
Palmer Hestley of Kingwood, Texas, fired the low round
of the day in the Boys Division with a 2-under 70 in
the afternoon.
The qualifiers, conducted by the American Junior Golf
Association at the par-72 Willow Fork Country Club,
featured a total of 173 boys and girls from eight states.
Lue, a 17-year-old competing in her first national
event, was pleased with her 71, her best competitive
round to date.
"I played about as well as I could today,"
said Lue, a high school junior. "I'm looking forward
to seeing how I stack up against the great field next
weekend."
Also earning a spot in next week's tournament was Alice
Kim of Los Angeles, who carded a 3-over 75 then earned
her spot in the tournament with a par on the first playoff
hole.
Hestley qualified for the AJGA's annual Easter Weekend
event for the second straight year by playing a round
that included an impressive six birdies.
"I began the day really well and finished with
three birdies on the final six holes," Hestley
said. "It's easy to make bogies out here so I knew
I had to make a lot of birdies to go low."
Also capturing spots from the afternoon qualifier with
1-under 71s were Kevin Newman of League City, Texas;
James Minahan of Spring, Texas; and Matt Boyd of Sugar
Land, Texas. The final two spots up for grabs in the
afternoon qualifier went to Martin Ureta of Tampa, Fla.,
and Jeff Cairns of Austin, Texas, who both posted even-par
72s.
An additional six boys qualified in the morning round.
Four players carded even-par 72s, including Bryan Boyd
of Austin, Texas; Gatlyn McDonald of New Braunfels,
Texas; Brock McDowell of League City, Texas; and Derek
Rogers of Houston. Qualifying with 73s were two other
Texans, Scooter Jefferson of Montgomery and Creighton
Honeck of Austin.
Next weekend's tournament, which will be held at Whispering
Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, will feature 156
players from over 15 states. Players slated to compete
include reigning Polo Golf Boys Junior Player of the
Year Matthew Rosenfeld of Plano, Texas, and Girls Division
defending champion Mallory Code of Tampa, Fla. Code,
who lives with Cystic Fibrosis, was recently awarded
the Michael Brennan Courage Award by the Boomer Esiason
Foundation.
