JONATHAN MOORE'S 4-UNDER 68 LEADS
AT WHISPERING PINES Knoll, Lang and Lee share course record and top spot
in Girls Division
TRINITY, Texas - Jonathan Moore of Portland,
Ore., carded a 4-under-par 68 to garner the first-round
lead at the AJGA TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Whispering
Pines. Hwanhee Lee of Cerritos, Calif., Brittany Lang
of McKinney, Texas, and Ashley Knoll of The Woodlands,
Texas, fired 2-under 70s to share the lead in the Girls
Division.
The annual 36-hole Easter Weekend event, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, makes its debut
at the par-72 Whispering Pines Golf Club. The tournament
features a total of 156 boys and girls from 19 states
and Canada. Past winners of this event include Bob May,
Emilee Klein, Kellee Booth and Grace Park.
The 15-year-old Moore carded five birdies and a bogey
to lead a star-studded field that includes four Polo
Golf Junior All-Americans.
"I didn't miss a shot on the front nine,"
Moore said. "I scrambled on the back but I was
able to stay focused and make some key putts."
Chasing Moore in second place is Dallas native Tyler
Leon. Leon finished the day two shots back after carding
a 34-36-70. Honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-American
Ryan Baca of Richmond, Texas, Matthew Ellis of Ponca
City, Okla., Rand Arbuckle of College Station, Texas,
and Will Dodson of Tulsa, Okla., are tied for third
at 1-under 71.
In the Girls Division, Polo Golf Junior All-Americans
Lee and Lang joined 15-year-old Knoll with 2-under-70's
and a share of the women's course record and the first
round lead.
Lee, an honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-American
and winner of two AJGA events, tallied three birdies
on the front nine en route to a 3-under 33. Lee hit
14 greens on the day and attributed her performance
to consistency off the tee and precise iron play.
"The course was very challenging but rewarding
if you kept it in the fairway," Lee said. "I
did a good job of hitting greens in regulation. Hopefully
tomorrow I can get a few more putts to fall."
Lang, who carded a bogey-free round, is looking for
her second career AJGA win, after teaming with Cindy
Shin of McKinney, Texas, to win the 2000 AJGA Justin
Leonard/Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship.
"My key to the round was hitting fairways and
greens," said the 15-year-old Lang. "I was
playing with confidence coming into this event and hopefully
I can put together another solid round tomorrow."
Knoll, who finished fourth in this event last year,
played conservative early on in her round turning in
a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine. The 15-year-old finished
strong on the back nine posting three birdies on her
way to a 3-under 33.
"I have worked hard on my game of late and it
paid off today," Knoll said. "My goal was
to finish in the top five and post two rounds in the
70s. So far I'm off to a good start."
Action will continue on Easter Sunday with tee times
running from 7:30-9:18 a.m. in the first wave and 12:00-1:48
p.m. in the second wave.
