STEGMAIER FIRES 72 TO JUMP INTO BOYS
LEAD AT TUCKER ANTHONY
Janangelo extends Girls Division lead with second-round
74
BERNARDSTON, Mass. - Brett Stegmaier of Madison,
Conn., fired his second even-par 72 Wednesday to grab
a three-stroke lead in the Boys Division of the AJGA
Tucker Anthony Junior. Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford,
Conn., fired a 2-over 74 in her second round and leads
by eight strokes in the Girls Division entering Thursday's
final round.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association at Crumpin-Fox Club, features 84 players
representing 20 states and the District of Columbia.
All New England states are represented, led by 24 Massachusetts
natives.
Stegmaier made three birdies on the day and used some
short-game magic to fire his even-par second round.
He got up-and-down from the front, left greenside bunker
on No. 5 and then capitalized on a 3-foot birdie putt
on No. 7 after sticking a wedge from 130 yards.
"I got up-and-down when I needed to today,"
Stegmaier said. "I missed a lot of putts I could
have made, but I drove the ball well. I feel good for
tomorrow because I think I have a lower round in me
and I know if I hit the ball the same tomorrow I will
be in good position."
Stegmaier looks to improve upon a sixth-place finish
at the AJGA Greater Greensboro Chrysler Junior earlier
this year.
First-round co-leader Kevin Silva of New Bedford, Mass.,
and Derek Hurwitch of Longmeadow, Mass., are tied for
second at 3-over 147. Silva fired a 6-over-par 78 while
Hurwitch carded a 3-over 75.
Marco Poccia of Gansevoort, N.Y., sits in fourth at
148 after a second-round 77. First-round co-leader Tony
Dibitetto of Rochester, N.Y., and Thomas Feldman of
Washington, D.C., are tied for fifth at 149.
In the Girls Division, Janangelo birdied the 13th hole
by draining a 5-foot birdie putt after knocking her
8-iron close from 146 yards and sits in position to
take her fifth AJGA title of the season. She credits
fun in the round as the catalyst for her success.
"I just wanted to go out and have fun this week,"
Janangelo said. "I've had a great year and didn't
think it was possible to come out and be in a position
like this again. I'm just going to have fun tomorrow
because I always play better when I enjoy myself."
Mary Ellen Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., sits in
second place at 156 after a second-round 80 and Jeehae
Lee of Andover, Mass., is in third at 157 after a second-round
77.
Final-round action begins at 8 a.m. Thursday morning
on the No. 1 and 10 tees at the Crumpin-Fox Club. For
