AJGA TEXACE SAN ANTONIO SHOOTOUT
Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club, Live Oak Course
Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas
June 4-7, 2001
LEON WINS IN A PLAYOFF TO CLAIM TEXACE
SAN ANTONIO SHOOTOUT
Lang leads throughout to claim first AJGA title in Girls
Division
FAIR OAKS RANCH, Texas - Tyler Leon of Dallas,
Texas, defeated Ryan Posey of Dallas, Texas, in a one-hole
playoff to claim his first AJGA title at the AJGA Texace
San Antonio Shootout. In the Girls Division, Brittany
Lang of McKinney, Texas, overcame a shaky back nine
to claim her first AJGA title with a three-day total
of 72-70-77--219.
The 54-hole event, which featured 120 players including
100 Texans and over a dozen from the San Antonio area,
was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association
at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club, Live
Oak Course. Past winners of the event include Tiger
Woods (1992) and Kelli Kuehne (1995).
Leon, who attends the David Leadbetter Golf Academy,
was 1-over-par on the front nine before playing the
back nine at even-par en route to a three-day total
of 213. But a double bogey on the 446-yard, par-4 17th
hole dropped Leon into a tie for the lead, forcing a
playoff. On the playoff hole, Leon stuck his 150-yard
approach shot within five feet of the hole to birdie
the hole and win the tournament.
"I really wasn't trying to think about anything,"
Leon said about the playoff. "I just wanted to
shoot a low number. But it really feels good to win.
This is something I've always wanted to do and it's
great."
Posey, who fired a final-round 69, finished second
while Chris Elliot of Plano, Texas, was third at 215.
Lang, who finished second at the AJGA TaylorMade-adidas
Golf Junior at Chateau Elan and tied for seventh at
the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior earlier this
year, made the turn at 1-under-par after two birdies
on the front nine. She then double-bogeyed Nos. 12 and
13 before two more bogies on Nos. 15 and 16 put her
at 6-over-par on the back nine. But crucial pars on
Nos. 17 and 18 allowed the 17-year-old to hold off a
late charge from Ashley Rollins of Austin, Texas, and
claim a two-stroke victory.
"I played pretty well on the front, but the back
was a different story," Lang said. "I started
thinking about what I was going to do and I think that
hurt me. I was not hitting it very well but I just tried
to get back into my routine.
"It feels really good," Lang said about her
first AJGA victory. "I'm happy and excited. I just
wish I could have had a better back nine, but I still
was able to get it done."
Rollins, who trailed Lang by five strokes heading into
the final round, carded 14 pars and one birdie on the
day en route to a final-round 74 and a second-place
finish. Michaela Cavener of Ponca City, Okla., who was
playing in her first AJGA event, finished third at 72-76-77--225.
