DODSON FIRES A 5-UNDER 67 TO GRAB FIRST-ROUND LEAD IN TEXAS
Fair Oaks native Toohey one stroke back; Three-way tie atop of Girls Division

FAIR OAKS RANCH, Texas -- Will Dodson of Tulsa, Okla., fired a 5-under-par 67 to build a one-stroke lead after the first round of the AJGA Texace San Antonio Shootout. Local resident Matt Toohey of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, sits one stroke back at 68. Michaela Cavener of Ponca City, Okla.; Brittany Lang of McKinney, Texas, and Ashley Rollins of Austin, Texas, sit in a three-way tie for the lead in the Girls Division at even-par 72.
The 54-hole event, which features 120 players including 100 Texans and over a dozen from the San Antonio area, is being conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club, Live Oak Course. Past winners of the event include Tiger Woods (1992) and Kelli Kuehne (1995).

Dodson, who carded eight birdies on the day, got off to a fast start, opening with three straight birdies before making the turn at 4-under-par 32. After a bogey on No. 11, the 17-year-old recovered quickly with two more birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 en route to a one-under-par 35 on the back nine.

"I started off quick because I was hitting the ball where I wanted it to go," Dodson said. "I tried to play patient by not using my driver too much off the tee and instead used my 3-wood and irons."

Toohey, who will be a senior at Boerne High School next fall, was a model of consistency on the putting green needing only 24 putts. His 3-under-par 33 on the front nine was highlighted by a chip-in eagle on the 482-yard, par-5 eighth hole.

"I expected to play well because it's my home course," the 18-year-old Toohey said. "I need to keep playing well and stay patient like I did today."

Jeff Lanier of Austin, Texas; Jeremy Alcorn of Brownwood, Texas; Chris Wheeler of Allen, Texas, and Tyler Garrett of Houston, Texas, sit in a four-way tie for third at 3-under-par 69.

In the Girls Division, Cavener made the turn at one-under-par 35 after two birdies on the front nine before carding a 37 on the back nine. Lang, an honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-American, finished with three birdies on the day and missed only four greens. Rollins made the turn at even-par before playing the final six holes at one-under-par.

Second round action begins Wednesday, June 5, with tee times running from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
