CARLSON AND JACOBY EARN MEDALIST HONORS AT
AJGA ARIZONA JUNIOR CLASSIC QUALIFIER

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Mitch Carlson of Las Vegas and Nikki Jacoby of San Diego earned medalist honors in their respective divisions at the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic Qualifier.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, Saturday's qualifier at Palm Valley Golf Club was one of 35 events in the 2001 Pepsi Qualifier Series. The 87 competitors in Saturday's event were competing for three Boys Division and three Girls Division spots in next weekend's AJGA Arizona Junior Classic at The Raven Golf Club at South Mountain.

Carlson, 16, overcame a double-bogey on his second hole to fire a 2-under-par 70. He said that positioning off the tee was the key to carding six birdies.

"I hit almost every green because I kept it in the fairway," said Carlson. "I'm looking forward to next weekend. I'll play my best, and whatever happens, happens."

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Jake Grodzinsky of Cornville, Ariz., at 71, and Michael Thompson of Tucson, Ariz., at 72. Thompson outlasted Duncan Street of Bonita, Calif., in a sudden-death playoff for the final spot, carding a birdie on the first hole.

Girls Division medalist Jacoby needed only 26 putts en route to a 1-under-par 71. Jacoby got off to a good start with a 33 on the front nine, birdying her first two holes. She was 4-under-par until No. 16 when a double-bogey cooled her off.

"The wind made it hard, but my putting really came through for me today," said Jacoby. "This is my first AJGA event, so I was just trying to hit greens in regulation and make pars. I was able to do both for the most part."

Sarah Heffel of Mesa, Ariz., at 74, and Mayumi Kobayashi of Santa Monica, Calif., at 75, also qualified for next weekend's AJGA Arizona Junior Classic.

Seventy-three juniors will tee it up on Sunday for day two of qualifying, set to take place at Aguila Golf Course.

Fifteen states and Japan will be represented in the 144-player field, including 27 Arizona juniors. Twenty-four Polo Golf Junior All-Americans are slated to compete. Past champions of the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic include University of Southern California freshman Hunter Mahan.
