AJGA ROBERT TRENT JONES GOLF TRAIL
JUNIOR CLASSIC
Magnolia Grove Golf Club, Falls and Crossings Course
Mobile, Alabama
August 31 - September 3, 2001
MOORE GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE TO TAKE TITLE
Jackie Beers wins third AJGA title in Sudden-Death
Playoff
MOBILE, Ala. - It took a one hour weather delay,
but Jonathan Moore of Portland, Ore., finally finished
what he started and claimed the Boys Division title
at the AJGA Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior Classic
with an 8-under-par 68-71-69--208 tournament record.
In the Girls Division, Jackie Beers Midlothian, Va.,
won on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with
a 4-under-par 71-71-70--212 tournament total.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
the AJGA Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior Classic,
featured a field of 171 juniors ages 13-18 representing
26 states and two countries. Held by the Magnolia Grove
Golf Club on both the Falls and Crossing courses, the
field included 13 players from the state of Alabama
and 10 Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
Moore's victory eclipsed Ty Tryon's previous year's
tournament total low-round record of 210 by two strokes.
This win was a true measuring stick of his game, Moore
said.
"This is really, really special," he said.
"Just to know that the hard work is paying off
makes it worth it. This tournament showed me that. That
makes me feel good."
Moore was pacing down the 54th and final hole of the
tournament when the weather horns blew. The two leader
groups remaining on the course were forced to pack it
in for more than an hour before completing their rounds.
"I had the emotions going, that it was coming
to an end, and the sirens went off," Moore said.
"I ate a hamburger and tried not to stress. I just
turned the focus back on when we went back out."
Moore did just that. He birdied the par-5 18th to finish
four strokes ahead of Casey Whittenberg of Memphis,
Tenn. James Vargas of Miami, Fla., finished third at
214. Jeff Bell of Plano, Texas, finished eight shots
back at 216. Tied for fifth were Benjamin Spitz of Norwell,
Mass., and Shane Sigsbee of McKinney, Texas, at 217.
In the Girls Division, Beers overcame a sluggish front
nine and a sudden-death playoff to pick up her third
AJGA title of the summer.
It took quite a bit of doing by Beers to even reach
the playoff. Two shots back heading into the final round
and three shots behind Paula Creamer of Pleasanton,
Calif., who was in the group ahead of her, after 15
holes, Beers birdied Nos. 16 and 17. Creamer then bogeyed
No. 18, which Beers and second-round leader Nicole Hage
of Coral Springs, Fla., parred to both get into the
playoff.
"I honestly had no idea where Paula was and in
my group it was head-to-head all day," said Beers,
who shot a final round 37-33--70. "On 16 I knew
I had to finally step up and get it done. I had a lot
of opportunities on the back nine and on 16 and 17 they
finally started to fall."
Once in the playoff, which began on No. 18, Beers stuck
her second shot on the 346-yard, par-4 within 2 feet
of the hole and converted on the birdie chance while
Creamer and Hage both made pars.
"My ball actually ended up about a foot away from
my divot the first time," Beers said. "I kind
of chunked the first one, but the second time I just
let it loose. I stood over the ball and knew I had to
give it my all."
Beers had won earlier this summer at the AJGA Greater
Greensboro Chrysler Junior and at the AJGA Avila Junior
Classic, but this victory was a little more special.
"This is the one tournament I really wanted to
win," said Beers, who has competed in the event
four times. "It feels like home here and growing
up only an hour down the road, I have always felt this
to be my local tournament."
Rounding out the top of the Girls Division were Irene
Cho of La Habra, Calif., who shot a final-round of 1-under-par
71 to finish a shot out of the playoff at 213 and Brittany
Lincicome of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Chris Brady of
Apex, N.C., at 221.
