LANIER GRABS OPENING-ROUND LEAD WITH A 66
Jane Lee's 2-under-par 70 takes Girls Division Lead

TEMPE, Ariz. - Jeff Lanier of Austin, Texas, claimed the Boys Division first-round lead at the AJGA PING Phoenix Junior Championship by carding a 6-under-par 66. In the Girls Division, Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif., shot a 2-under-par 70 to stake her claim at the top of the leaderboard.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA PING Phoenix Junior Championship features a field of 84 junior golfers, ages 13-18, representing 12 states and includes 10 players from Arizona. Included in this week's field at the Karsten Golf Course at ASU are seven Polo Golf Junior All-Americans. Past winners of this event include Tiger Woods, Emilee Klein, Grace Park and Heather Bowie.

Lanier credited some late night bedtime reading to his AJGA career-low round.

"I was reading Bob Rotella's book Golf is a Game of Confidence last night," he said. "I just kept telling myself a few things I read. Things like forgetting about the shot I just hit and staying in the present."

Lanier likes the position he put himself in. However, with a strong field still on his heels, he knows that there is still a lot of golf to be played.

"I need to put three solid rounds together," he said. "I've never felt like I've totally done that. It feels good to be at the top, but I want to keep it that way.

Chasing Lanier when play resumes will be Michael Feuerstein of La Holla, Calif., at 69, Pansing Singhaseni of Beverly Hills, Calif., Anthony Kim of La Quinta, Calif., Cody Upham of Vancouver, Wash., and Kyle Gentry of Carmel, Calif., at 70.

In the Girls Division, Lee, aone-time AJGA champion at the 2000 AJGA Compaq Izzo Junior Classic, has been knocking at the door of her first 2001 win all summer. She's had second place finishes at the AJGA Marsh Kansas City Junior and AJGA Arizona Junior Classic and a fourth place finish at the AJGA McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship.

"I think that having the feeling that I can and will win it will definitely help," Lee said. "I haven't felt it quite yet, but I'm trying. I just can't get too full of myself."

Lee knows that confidence is a key to winning tournaments. The 15-year-old is ready to be the one everyone is gunning for.

"I'm very nervous," she said. "It's only a one shot lead. I'd like it to be four."
Three-time 2001 AJGA champion Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., fired a 1-under-par 71 to position herself in second. Jennie Lee of Huntington Beach, Calif., is in third after her even-par opening round.

Second-round action will begin on Saturday with tee times running from 6:30-8:36 a.m. off of the No. 1 and 10 tees.
