RAINER FIRES 4-UNDER-PAR 66 TO GRAB LEAD AT OSSO JUNIOR
Melton and Shin share first-round lead in Girls Division

EDMOND, Okla. -- Ryan Rainer of Norman, Okla., fired a 4-under-par 66 to stake claim to a one-shot lead after the first round of the AJGA OSSO Junior at Oak Tree. Nicole Melton of San Antonio, Texas, and Cindy Shin of Coppell, Texas, share the Girls Division lead after carding 2-over-par 72s.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Oak Tree Country Club, East Course, features 144 players, ages 13-18, representing 21 states.
Rainer's ability to get up-and-down kept him consistent with par and opened up birdie chances along the way. A par save on the second hole helped settle some early nerves.

"I was a little nervous, but I calmed down after the up-and-down on No. 2," the University of Kansas signee said.

Five birdies on the day, including a chip-in birdie on the 433-yard, par-4 16th hole has the 18-year-old showing the way.

"I've been off a little bit lately," Rainer said. "So it was nice to score well today."

Ryan Baca of Richmond, Texas, carded a 34-33--67 and trails by one stroke. Scott Siebert of Chesterfield, Mo., and Tyler Garrett of Houston, Texas, are in third at even-par 70. Bryan Vahlberg of Norman, Okla; Taylor Palmer of Edmond, Okla., and Jonathan Shuss of Scottsdale, Ariz., are five strokes back at 71.

In the Girls Division, Melton benefited from back-to-back birdie putts of 30-and 40-feet on Nos. 11 and 12 to offset a double bogey on the par-3 14th hole to finish at 36-36--72.

"I focused pretty well today," said Melton, who has signed a letter of intent with Texas A&M University to play in the fall. "This course plays fast, but I like that."

Shin got off to a great start with a 2-under-par front nine but a cool down on the back nine has the 16-year-old tied for the lead heading into the second round.

"I thought I putted pretty well today," Shin said. "I need to keep it in the fairway tomorrow and cut down on mistakes."

Erin Tone of Gilbert, Ariz., sits one stroke back at 37-36--73.

Second-round action begins Wednesday, with tee times running from 7:30-9:09 a.m. and 12:00-1:39 p.m. off the first and 10th tees.
