AJGA CLUBCORP JUNIOR AT MISSION HILLS
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Taylor Neal of Thousand
Oaks, Calif., and Andrew Price of Mission Viejo, Calif.,
both fired 74 to share medalist honors in the Boys Division
at the AJGA ClubCorp Junior at Mission Hills Qualifier.
Allison Martin of Bakersfield, Calif., and Jane Park
of La Crescenta, Calif., both shot 76 to be crowned
co-medalists in the Girls Division.
The 20th annual ClubCorp Junior at Mission Hills, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association runs June 25-28.
The 84-player field includes players representing 10
states and Scotland.
Extremely windy conditions lead to a number of higher
scores from players attempting to qualify for one of
the nine available boys' spots and three girls' spots
in the AJGA ClubCorp Junior at Mission Hills.
Price's first nine total of 33 followed by a 41 was
characteristic of many players in that he thrived early
during the calmer conditions and struggled to battle
through the winds later in the day.
"I was able to sink some putts early and got off
to a really good start," Price said. "Once
the wind picked up, I knew the scores would be high,
so I just kept my composure and made pars. I felt pretty
confident at the turn and knew that if I could hold
it together, that I would qualify."
Neal also credited keeping his patience as the key
to qualifying.
"I hit the ball great all day, but I just couldn't
make any putts. I just tried to go out and hit the ball
low and if you make bogey, you make bogey."
Also qualifying in the Boys Division were Michael Wilson
of Pacific Grove, Calif., D.J. Reeves of Mission Viejo,
Calif., Daniel Cho of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Michael
McCaig of Fountain Valley, Calif., at 75. Scott MacDonald
of Playa Del Rey, Calif., Steven Bullock of Dove County,
Calif., and David Yoon of Irvine, Calif., qualified
after scores of 76 placed them in a sudden-death playoff.
In the Girls Division, balanced nines lead both Martin
and Park on their way to medalist honors on a day when
they both knew that a higher score would not necessarily
keep them from qualifying.
"I knew with the conditions being what they were
that anything around par would be a good score,"
Martin said. "Even though 76 isn't a great score,
I thought that with the wind maybe I could do something
and I managed to stay consistent."
Park realized that conforming to the conditions was
what lead to her 37-39--76 total.
"I had to hit a lot of lower shots and I really
executed those well," Park said. "Seventy-six
is a good score under the conditions. I didn't think
I would shoot that low considering the wind."
Rounding out the qualifiers in the Girls Division was
Nikki Jacoby of San Diego at 79.
The first round of the AJGA ClubCorp Junior at Mission
Hills begins Tuesday, June 26, with the first tee time
set for 6:30 a.m., at Mission Hills Country Club.
