AJGA COMPAQ JUNIOR ALL-STAR CLASSIC
AT MIDLAND
Midland Country Club
Midland, Texas
May 29-31, 2001
MINAHAN, BARENG CLAIM FIRST AJGA
TITLES
Minahan fires second consecutive 2-under 70
MIDLAND, Texas - James Minahan of Spring, Texas,
fired a 2-under 70 Thursday to finish three strokes
ahead of the field to win the Boys Division, while Reb
Bareng of of Muntinlupa, Philippines, shot a 76 to win
the Girls Division at the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star
Classic at Midland.
The inaugural 36-hole event, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, was hosted by the par-72 Midland
Country Club. An 84 player field consisting of the top
13-15-year-olds in the country, including 68 boys and
16 girls, competed in the two-day tournament.
The 15-year-old Minahan was tied with first-round leader
James Lee of La Mirada, Calif., after nine holes, but
pulled away with a 35 on the back nine.
"I knew I was going to have to play solid on the
back to beat James and I was able to do that,"
Minahan said. "I'm just happy to win. I've placed
well in other tournaments, but this is my first win."
Lee, who shot a 69-74--143 to finish second, had a
one-stroke lead heading into the final round, but was
unable to hold off Minahan on the back nine. Minahan
sunk a 30-footer for birdie on 13 to tie Lee for the
lead and was able to par the last five holes, while
Lee bogeyed three of the last five.
"I played very solid today," Minahan said.
"I hit a lot of greens and putted well, but things
started to go my way after the putt on 13."
Jeffrey Edelman of Southlake, Texas, finished third
with rounds of 74-71--145. Rounding out the top five
at 147 were Will Osborne of Wichita Falls, Texas; Craig
Boone of El Paso, Texas; Kenny Palmer of Scottsdale,
Ariz; and Steve Han of Diamond Bar, Calif.
Bareng shot a final-round 76 to edge out Summerville,
S.C., native Mallory Hetzel for the Girls Division title.
Bareng was playing in her first AJGA tournament and
was able to break away from the pack with a 1-over 37
on the back.
"My irons and putting helped me make a move on
the back nine," the 15-year-old said. "I thought
I needed to shoot around a 76 to stay close to the top
and just play my game and not worry whether I won or
lost."
First-round leader Mallory Hetzel shot a 74-79--152
to finish second and Caney Hines of San Antonio shot
a 77-78--155 to finish third.
