WHITING SHOOTS 72 TO TAKE OVER LEAD IN GIRLS DIVISION
Stoltz holds on to Boys Division lead with a 74

WINDSOR, Colo. - Leah Whiting of Hilo, Hawaii, overcame a two-stroke penalty to card a second-round 72 and take over the top spot in the Girls Division. Drew Stoltz of Ft. Collins, Colo., maintained his lead in the Boys Division by shooting a 74.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Marsico Funds Colorado Junior Roundup features 99 players representing 17 states. Included in this week's field of 13-18 year-old players are 36 Coloradoans.

Whiting fought off a late to the tee penalty and a bout with illness, to shoot an even-par 72.

"I just told myself that I couldn't shoot anything over par," said Whiting of the early penalty. "I played real well today. I putted a lot better than I did yesterday and I'm starting to feel a lot better."

Whiting, who is playing in her first-ever AJGA tournament, is looking forward to the prospects of playing in the final Girls Division group on Friday.

"This is pretty exciting for my first event," said Whiting, whose senior year of high school is being put on hold until Monday as she competes in the tournament. "I'm just going to try and hit it to the middle of the greens and stay out of trouble."

Joining Whiting and her 150 tournament total atop the Girls' leaderboard are Alyssa Otero of Santa Fe, N.M., at 151 and Julie Kim of Rancho Palace Verde, Calif., and Ashley Forbes of La Quinta, Calif., at 152.

In the Boys Division, Stoltz got off to a slow start with a bogey on No. 1 and a double bogey on No. 4, but turned things around with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7.

"My front nine was really up and down," said Stoltz, whose tournament total of 142 gives him a two-stroke lead heading into Friday's final round. "I knew someone would shoot something low today and after the bogeys I knew I needed to get some birdies to get back around par. The birdies got me back on track and gave me a boost heading into the back nine.

"I'm going to try and play smart tomorrow, but not passive. I'm just going to try and keep it at par or better because I think it will be hard for someone to take it deep on the last day."

Among those who will be chasing Stoltz are four players at 144. Included in that group are Matthew Slovitt of Winnetka, Ill., Michael Baird of Castle Rock, Colo., Woogene Lee of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Marty Melcher of Redlands, Calif.

Final-round action begins Friday with tee times running from 7-11:27 a.m. off of the No. 1 tee.
