KIM'S 2-OVER-PAR 74 CAPTURES FIRST-ROUND LEAD AT ALVAMAR

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The nation's top junior girls in the country battled breezy conditions as first-round action concluded at the 10th annual Lucent Technologies Girls Junior Championship at Alvamar Country Club.

The event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, features 86 players representing 22 states, Canada and Japan. Former champions of this event include Kellee Booth, Kelli Kamimura, Leigh Anne Hardin, Miriam Nagl and Aree and Naree Song-Wongluekiet.

Kim, a first-team Polo Golf Junior All-American from Encino, Calif., birdied the 365-yard par-4 3rd en route to a 35-39--74, and a two-shot lead heading into the second round.

"This golf course is very challenging," said the 17-year-old Kim. "There is potential to post a big number on every hole, so my game plan was to play conservative."

Kim, who will attend Northwestern University in the fall, will look to garner her fourth AJGA title after carding a fourth-place finish at Eagle Bend Golf Course last year.

"Hopefully I will make a few more putts tomorrow," Kim said. "I gave myself a lot of opportunities for birdie today and I just didn't convert."

Dana Je fired a 4-over-par 76, and currently sits in sole possession of second place. The 17-year-old Orlando, Fla., native posted an even-par 36 on her front nine that included three birdies.

Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif., and Megan Hull of Mansfield, Texas, are tied for third with a pair of 77's, and 14-year-old Taylor Leon of Dallas, Texas, shot a 6-over 78 to capture the fifth spot.

Thirteen-year-old Morgan Pressel of Boca Raton, Fla., coming off her appearance at the U.S. Women's Open, carded an 82.

Second-round action will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. For more information on the AJGA Lucent Technologies Girls Junior Championship, or other AJGA events, please contact the tournament headquarters at (785) 842-0105.
