SIX BOYS AND TWO GIRLS QUALIFY FOR
AJGA LAS VEGAS FOUNDERS' LEGACY JUNIOR Steven Crossley and Dustin Robbins both card 72 to
share medalist honors
HENDERSON, Nev. - Despite gusty winds and 100-plus
degree heat, Steven Crossley and Dustin Robbins, both
from nearby Las Vegas, fired even-par 72's to medal
and qualify in the Boys Division on Sunday. Erin Tone
of Gilbert, Ariz., fired 78 in the Girls Division to
take medalist honors.
The qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf
Association, was held at The Legacy Golf Club in Henderson,
Nev. The six boys and two girls that made it through
today's qualifier will compete in the 12th annual AJGA
Las Vegas Founders' Legacy Junior beginning Tuesday
morning. Eighty-four of the nations top juniors, ages
13-18, will compete in this 54-hole event representing
11 states and England. Ten juniors from Nevada and 11
Polo Golf Junior All-Americans are also included in
the field.
At the end of today's qualifier, Crossley and Robbins
found that they have a lot more in common than they
thought. While neither have competed in an AJGA regular-season
event, both made the short commute in from Las Vegas
and both had enough to lead the boys division with identical
cards of 37-35--72.
"I feel great now that I have qualified for an
event," Robbins said. "I just hope to play
well and shoot a few good scores. If the conditions
hold up, three rounds at even par should be pretty good."
They, like the entire 100-player qualifier field, had
to endure some tough conditions.
"I grinded my way through the course," Crossley
said. "It wasn't easy, but I came through with
some birdies in the end when it counted."
Jason Gambonini of Encinitas, Calif, at 73, Jordan
Nasser of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Cody Hayes of Caldwell,
Idaho, and Joey Benedetti of Huntington Beach, Calif.,
all at 74, had enough to make the cut and qualify for
tournament play.
In the Girls Division, Tone's 38-40--78 was enough
to edge out Moah Chang of Los Angeles, who shot 41-39-80,
for low round of the day. Chang qualified for the second
and final girls spot available for the tournament.
"It was rough," Tone said. "I learned
I need to finish my round strong. I'm hoping to take
the good things I did today and improve on them."
The AJGA Las Vegas Founders' Legacy Junior will begin
play Tuesday at 7 a.m. off the 1st and 10th tees at
The Legacy Golf Club.
