MACKENZIE'S EVEN-PAR 71 SETS HERSELF
APART FROM GIRLS DIVISION
Four Fire 2-Under-Par 69 to Sit Atop the Stacked-Up
Boys Division
AURORA, Ore. - It's a tale of two divisions
after the first round of the PING Langdon Farms Junior
Classic. In the Girls Division, Paige Mackenzie of Yakima,
Wash., distanced herself by four shots from her nearest
competitor by shooting an even-par 35-36--71. In the
Boys Division, Erik Olson of Renton, Wash., David Fern
of Spokane, Wash., Matthew Fladwood of Redmond, Ore.,
and Nick Higham of Shelley, Idaho all came in with 2-under-par
69's. Nearly one-third of the 69-player Boys Division
is within five shots of the lead.
The PING Langdon Farms Junior Classic, conducted by
the American Junior Golf Association, features 84 of
the nation's top junior golfers ages 13-18. Hosted by
Langdon Farms Golf Club, this week's field includes
players from nine states and Canada, five of whom are
Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
Mackenzie, who placed third at last year's championship,
was pleased with her performance, but knew it could
have been better. The future University of Washington
golfer found that driving the ball well was good enough
for today.
"I was pretty relaxed," Mackenzie said. "It
was an average round. I'm not going to say that there
is not room for improvement, because there is always
room for improvement. But I'll be happy with three 71's
at the end of the week."
Erin Andrews of Las Vegas, at 75, and Sarah Bassett
of Spokane, Wash., at 76, will try to cut into Mackenzie's
lead when play begins tomorrow.
The Boys Division is still up for grabs with well over
half the field within striking distance. The leaders
know that a low score from just about anyone can shake
things up quickly.
"This round is history," Fladwood said of
his 36-33--69. "I just need to play my own game.
If you hit a bunch of greens at this course, scores
can go low."
The four at the top all agreed that a solid game plan
is necessary when so many are close to the lead. The
key, they said, was sticking to it.
"I need to stay focused and not get rattled,"
Olson said after his 33-36--69 AJGA career-low tournament
round. "My head never got in the way. I never got
frustrated and kept plugging away. The key is to keep
it that way."
Sean Packer of Sumner, Wash., fired the lone 1-under-par
70 in the Boys Division to join Olson, Fern, Fladwood
and Higham in the top five.
A special highlight in the Boys Division came when Ian
Clark of Federal Way, Wash., aced the 204-yard, par-3
17th with a 5-iron.
Second-round action begins Wednesday with tee times
starting at 7:30 a.m. off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
