AJGA LA PURISIMA JUNIOR
La Purisima Golf Course
Lompoc, Calif.
July 2-5, 2001
LEY COMES FROM FOUR DOWN TO WIN AT
LA PURISIMA
Lee cruises to second-career victory in Girls Division
LOMPOC, Calif.- Tyler Ley of Santa Barbara,
Calif., fired a 3-under-par 69 to overcome a four stroke
deficit and win the Boys Division of AJGA La Purisima
Junior. Stella Lee of Irvine, Calif., cruised to a 9-stroke
victory in the Girls Division after carding a 1-over-par
73.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, was held at the par-72 La Purisima
Golf Course. The field featured 87 players representing
five states, England and Scotland, and included five
Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
Ley came out firing at the leaders with birdies on
Nos. 4, 7, and 9 to put him within striking distance.
After a bogey on No. 14, Ley regrouped on the 532-yard,
par-5 15th, sticking a wedge close to the hole from
120 yards out and draining the short birdie putt to
pull him closer to the leaders. Blake Brown of Atascadero,
Calif., had the lead heading into the final round and
was able to build on his lead early with birdies on
his first two holes, but a triple bogey on the 167-yard,
par-3 17th gave Ley the opening he needed.
"I talked to Blake after he finished No. 10 and
knew he said he was 2-under on the day," Ley said.
"I didn't know if I still had a chance to win,
but I just kept grinding. I knew shooting a 33 on the
front would at least put me close."
Ley carded an even-par 36 on the back and was able
to save par on No. 18 to preserve his one-shot lead
over Brown and earn his first career AJGA victory in
only his second event.
"The win means a lot to me," the 17-year-old
said. "I was finally able to go out and show everyone
what I can do."
Brown finished with a 2-over-par 74 to put himself
alone in second with a three-day total of 215, just
shy of his first AJGA title.
"I just had one bad hole today," Brown said.
"I played with Tyler the first two days and I knew
he had it in him. If anyone else was going to win, it
was going to be Tyler. He was playing some good golf."
Kevin Larsen, also of Santa Barbara, finished third
at 216. Andrew Price, of Mission Viejo, Calif., Jon
Friedman of Irvine, Calif., and Brandon Christianson
of Valencia, Calif., finished in a three-way tie for
fourth at 217.
In the Girls Division, Lee entered the final round
with a 10-shot lead, but it didn't stop her from playing
aggressive. Lee got off to a hot start with a pair of
birdies on Nos. 2 and 6 en route to a 1-under 35 on
the front nine. On the 365-yard, par-4 2nd hole, Lee
put her approach within a foot of the hole and tapped
in for birdie. The 17-year-old then sunk a 10-footer
for birdie on No. 6 to extend her lead as the wind started
to blow.
"I'm very happy to win," Lee said. "I
just wanted to shoot as well as yesterday. I hit the
ball very consistent today, but the wind picked up on
the back which made it hard to hit greens so I just
tried to make pars."
Lee shot 2-over on the back to finish the day with
a 73 and give her a three-day total of 214. Irene Cho,
of La Habra, Calif., fired a 2-under-par 70 to jump
into second place at 223. Walailak Satarak of Paramount,
Calif., finished third with 76-76-74--226.
