BROWN REMAINS CONSISTENT TO TAKE
LEAD AT LA PURISIMA
Lee fires a 4-under-par 68 to build lead in
Girls Division
LOMPOC, Calif.- Blake Brown of
Atascadero, Calif., carded a bogey-free 3-under-par
69 to sit atop of the leaderboard in the Boys Division
after the second round of the AJGA La Purisima Junior.
Stella Lee of Irvine, Calif., continues to build her
lead in the Girls Division after firing a 4-under-par
68.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, is being held at the par-72
La Purisima Golf Course. The field features 87 players
representing five states, England and Scotland, and
includes five Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.
Starting off the No. 10 tee, Brown steadily made par
until the 366-yard, par-4 14th hole. Brown sank a 25-foot
birdie putt to generate confidence in his putter for
the rest of the round.
"I'm rolling the ball well right now," said
Brown, who has signed a letter of intent to the University
of California-Davis to play in the fall. "I missed
a few birdie putts but not having any bogeys on my scorecard
is excellent."
Brown connected on 15 of 18 greens and played the front
nine at 2-under-par 34 to take a one-shot lead heading
into the final round at 141. Brown took advantage of
the cool conditions and early tee time to manage the
golf course well.
"The cool conditions helped me because I was able
to focus on the golf course and not the weather,"
Brown said. "Getting off early was also good because
I was able to avoid the late-morning winds even though
the course played a little longer."
Brown looks to stay consistent heading into the final
round tomorrow.
"I just want to play my game instead of trying
to play like the other people in my group," said
the 18-year-old. "I need to hit the ball well and
concentrate on getting it in the cup."
Bryson Young of Reno, Nev., sits alone in second place
at 142 after posting a 1-under-par 71. Kevin Larsen
of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Peter Campbell of Encinitas,
Calif., are tied in third at 143. Tyler Ley of Santa
Barbara, Calif., and first-round leader Brandon Christianson
of Valencia, Calif., are four strokes back at 145.
In the Girls Division, Lee carded six birdies including
a spectacular recovery on the 340-yard, par-4 18th hole.
Faced with a tree in her direct line of play, Lee's
second-shot fade from 130 yards away spun away from
the left side fringe and within 10 feet of the flagstick.
Lee connected on the birdie opportunity, giving herself
a 10-shot lead at 3-under-par 141.
"I putted very well today," said the University
of California-Irvine signee. "Hopefully tomorrow
I continue to play consistent as the first two rounds
and shoot around even-par."
Sunny Oh of Torrance, Calif., sits in second place
at 151.Young Pak of Cerritos, Calif., Yvonne Choe of
Temple City, Calif., and Walailak Satarak of Paramount,
Calif., are tied for third place at 152.
Final-round action for the AJGA La Purisima Junior
begins Thursday morning with tee times starting at 6:30
a.m. For more information regarding the AJGA La Purisima
