CHRISTIANSON TAKES EARLY LEAD IN LOMPOC WITH A 3-UNDER 69
Lee alone atop Girls Division with 1-over 73

LOMPOC, Calif.- Brandon Christianson of Valencia, Calif., fired a 3-under-par 69 to grab the early lead in the Boys Division at the AJGA La Purisima Junior. Stella Lee of Irvine, Calif., sits in first place in the Girls Division after posting a 1-over-par 73.

The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, is being held at the par-72 La Purisima Golf Course. The field features 87 players representing five states, England and Scotland, and includes five Polo Golf Junior All-Americans.

Christianson was consistent throughout his round, hitting all 18 greens and carding four birdies and only one bogey en route to his 34-35--69.

"I think hitting the greens is important because there is a lot of trouble around the greens on this course," Christianson said. "I didn't really hit any bad shots today."

Christianson nearly holed his approach on No. 11, sticking a lob wedge to within four feet of the hole before tapping in for birdie. The Valencia High School student kept it going on the par-3 17th, hitting a 7-iron inside of five feet and draining the putt for another birdie.

"Tomorrow, I need to keep doing what I did today, which is hitting fairways and greens," the 15-year-old said.

Bryson Young of Reno, Nev., shot a 1-under-par 71 and sits in a tie for second place with Zach Mowbray of Mesa, Ariz. Young double bogeyed Nos. 3 and 5 to put him at 4-over for his round after five holes, but the 17-year-old got hot on the back nine, starting a string of four consecutive birdies on the 438-yard, par-4 10th hole with a 6-foot birdie putt.

"I always seem to start slow, I just usually don't start this slow," Young said. "But I was relaxed today and I was able to pick it up at the end and take advantage of the birdie holes."

In a seven-way tie for fourth, Andrew Price of Mission Viejo, Calif., Louis Bishop of Murrieta, Calif., Peter Campbell of Encinitas, Calif., Scott MacDonald of Playa Del Rey, Calif., Neno Boonyaplanun of Irvine, Calif., Tyler Ley of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Blake Brown of Atascadero, Calif., all shot 72s.

Defending champion John Poucher of Santa Barbara, Calif., shot a 76 and sits in a tie for 25th place.

In the Girls Division, Lee carded 17 pars during her round, and only a bogey on No. 4 kept the 17-year-old from shooting even-par.

"I feel pretty good about my round because I hit the ball consistent," Lee said. "My short putting was really good and my chipping was also good."
Julie Kim of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., is a shot off the lead in second place after a 2-over-par 74. Walailak Satarak of Paramount, Calif., Irene Cho of Temple City, Calif., Mika Takayama of Alameda, Calif., Young Pak of Cerritos, Calif., and Sunny Oh of Torrance, Calif., are tied for third at 76.
