HAN MAINTAINS LEAD AFTER SECOND
ROUND
Athas swings into a two-stroke lead in Girls Division
CHAMPIONSGATE, Fla. - Steve Han
of Chino Hills, Calif., kept his opening-round lead
with a level-par round Friday, giving him a 4-under-par
140 tournament total at the American Junior Golf Association's
Callaway Golf Junior All-Star Series Championship.
Christi Athas of Eldora, Iowa, sits atop the Girls
Division with a two-round total of 6-over-par 150.
The AJGA Callaway Golf Junior All-Star
Championship, a 54-hole event conducted by the American
Junior Golf Association, includes 57 of the world's
top 13-16-year-old junior golfers. To be invited to
this event, each junior had to prove their ability
by finishing at or near the top of the leaderboard
in one of the six AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star events.
Han's even-par 72 during the second
round secures him the top spot on the leaderboard
going into Saturday's final round.
"I made a lot more putts yesterday
than I did today," the freshman at Ayala High
School said. "I made a lot of good approach shots,
but I had way too many up-and-downs today."
Han also noticed a change in weather
which effected his overall physical and mental game.
"There was more wind today that
made it very hard for me to play well," the fifteen-year-old
said.
During Saturday's final round, Han plans
to concentrate more on his putting and hopes the wind
is not going to be a distraction.
Rounding out the top five in the Boys
Division are Michael Haverfield of Louisville, Ky.,
at 144, Jason Cook of Windermere, Fla., at 145 and
James Lee of La Mirada, Calif., Will Haydon of Palo
Alto, Calif., and Kenny Palmer of Scottsdale, Ariz.,
tied at 146.
In the Girls Division, Athas' two-day
total of 6-over-par 150 gives her a two-stroke lead
over her closest competitors. Athas took the honors
at the 2001 AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at
Eagle Ridge giving her eligibility for this week's
championship.
"During both the first and second
rounds, I had been hitting the fairways and greens
really well," the junior at Eldora New Providence
High School said. "My putter was especially working
for me today."
The Iowan's strategy going into the
final round is simple: Remain focused and relaxed.
"I want to play the same way tomorrow
as I have played the past two days and try to keep
my mental game strong," she said.
Trailing by two-strokes is Heather Wright
of Houston, Texas, and Whitney Sylvan of Columbia,
S.C., both at 152.
Final-round action begins Saturday
morning with tee times from 7:30 - 10:21 a.m. off
the No. 1 tee. For more information concerning the
