CURRAN TAKES BOYS DIVISION HONORS WITH 1-UNDER 70

Gildea takes medalist honors in Girls Division with 77

AVON, Conn. Jon Curran of Hopkinton, Mass., fired a 1-under-par 70 Sunday at Blue Fox Run Golf Course to take medalist honors in the Boys Divison of the Pepsi Qualifier for the AJGA Greater Hartford Jaycees Junior Classic. Haley Gildea of East Greenwich, R.I., led the Girls Division with a 77.

The 14-year-old Curran used good putting touch and solid long-irons on the back nine to lead the Boys Division. Curran bogeyed holes No. 7, 9 and 15 but battled back with birdies on holes No. 11, 14, 17 and 18 to finish the day at 1-under-par.

"I was really taking advantage of the birdie opportunities I had on the back nine today," Curran said. "I played the long holes on the back nine well with some good long-irons. I was making the 10-15 footers I needed today."

Curran will look to improve on other high finishes in AJGA tournaments from earlier this year. He finished in a tie for fifth at the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Fieldstone and in a tie for eighth at the AJGA Compaq Junior All-Star Classic at Eagle Ridge.

"I¹m playing well right now and I think I can compete if I play my best this week."

Brent Herlihy of Glens Falls, N.Y., qualified by carding an even-par round of 71 while Brett Lange of Atlanta, Ga., carded a 1-over 72 to qualify. Benjamin Stranzl of Cherryville, Pa., Thomas Feldman of Washington, D.C., and Matt Demaro of Newburgh, N.Y., fired rounds of 73 to qualify.

David Larado of Sayville, N.Y., Erik Easton of Granby, Conn., and Rick Reissman of Suffern, N.Y., qualified by shooting 74. Logan Terry of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., carded a 75 but qualified by making a par on the fourth playoff hole to outlast Randal Hanke of New York, N.Y.

In the Girls Division, Haley Gildea fought off the challenge from 15 other girls to qualify. The 17-year-old Gildea overcame a quadruple bogey on No. 5 and got up-and-down from the trees on No. 6 to get back on the right track and post a 6-over round of 77.

"I putted really well today," Gildea said. "I made the putts when I needed and that was the difference today."

Gildea will try to top a fourth place finish at the AJGA Toldo Group Eastern Canadian Junior this week.

First-round action for the AJGA Greater Hartford Jaycees Junior Classic begins at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning at Wethersfield Country Club.
