AJGA GREATER HARTFORD JAYCEES JUNIOR
CLASSIC
Wethersfield Country Club
Wethersfield, Conn.
August 20-23, 2001
JANANGELO GRABS HARTFORD TITLE FOR
THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR
Amole wins first AJGA title with final-round 71
WETHERSFIELD, Conn.-Elizabeth Janangelo of West
Hartford, Conn., fired a final-round 73 Thursday to
win her third consecutive AJGA Greater Hartford Jaycees
Junior Classic. Zack Amole of Denver, Pa., came from
one shot back to win his first AJGA event at 2-under-par.
The 54-hole event, conducted by the American Junior
Golf Association, was held at Wethersfield Country Club
and featured 99 players representing 17 states, the
District of Columbia and Canada.
The 17-year-old Janangelo jockeyed all day with second-round
leader Kristen White of Doylestown, Pa., but finally
created some breathing room for herself when she made
par on No. 15 and White three-putted for bogey.
Janangelo headed to the 16th tee with an aggressive
mindset and smashed her tee shot over the lake on the
par 5. White followed suit with a successful attempt
at carrying the lake. White was first to play and knocked
her second shot to the green from under a tree and left
herself a 10-foot eagle putt. Janangelo left herself
a 25-foot eagle attempt. After Janangelo's putt raced
six feet past the hole, White made her eagle putt and
waited for Janangelo's birdie try. Janangelo sank her
birdie and the two headed to the 17th hole tied for
the championship.
"I made the putts that counted today," Janangelo
said. "I knew the importance of winning this tournament
in front of a home crowd and I came through in the clutch."
White was first to play on the 173-yard, par-3 17th
hole. After her ball stayed in the rough just short
of the green, Janangelo placed her ball in the middle
of the green and took a one stroke lead to the 18th
tee after White failed to convert her up-and-down. That
was the only cushion Janangelo needed as she blasted
her drive down the middle of the fairway and capped
her performance with a 5-foot par putt on the 54th hole
of the tournament and enjoyed the one-stroke victory.
"The local support for the tournament was great
this week," Janangelo said. "I wanted to go
out and win this week. I'm happy with the way I played."
This win is Janangelo's fourth AJGA title of the season.
Her previous three wins came at the Polo Golf Junior
Classic, Sand Barrens Junior Championship and McDonald's
Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship. She also played
in the Thunderbird International Junior and the Rolex
Tournament of Champions.
White carded a 76 in the final round to finish in second
at 219 while Anna Grzebien of Saunderstown, R.I., shot
a 75 to finish third at 225. Grzebien has played well
recently with wins at the AJGA Marsh Junior at Bethpage
State Park and the Lessing's AJGA Classic.
In the Boys Division, Amole used two birdies on the
day to shoot even-par 71 and take home the championship.
Amole needed to get up-and-down from the rough on No.
17 after hitting his 4-iron short and right of the green
to take his lead to the 18th.
"I made some good saves today to keep me in it,"
Amole said. "I hit a lot of good putts that didn't
fall, but I am very happy to have my first win."
Phillip Telliard of Riverside, Calif., fired a final-round
2-under 69 to finish in second place at even-par 213.
Matt McLean of Miami, lit up the par-71 Wethersfield
Country Club by shooting a tournament-low round 5-under
66 in the final round. McLean finished in third place
at 1-over 214. Second-round leader Kellen Altman of
Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Dennis Gosier of Gansevoort,
N.Y., finished in a tie for fourth at 2-over 215.
