PULLIAM CLAIMS MEDALIST HONORS AND FIRST NATIONAL TITLE
Sixteen players gain automatic entries for 2002 AJGA tournaments

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Charlie Pulliam of Bardstown, Ky., played his final nine holes at even-par to hold off a trio and claim the inaugural AJGA Postseason Junior at Hagerstown with rounds of 74-78-152 on Sunday.

The 36-hole event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, was held at Beaver Creek Country Club and featured 84 players from 18 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The tournament is one of two events being held this weekend for male members, ages 13-18, who have been unsuccessful in gaining entry into AJGA events in the past.

Playing in the final group of the day, Pulliam's round began with some excitement.

"I started out hot with a birdie on No. 1," Pulliam said. "I stuck my shot to two feet and then made my putt."

But unfortunately for Pulliam, it was not a sign of things to come as he played his next seven holes at 7-over-par, including double bogeys on both of the par-3's.

Another bogey looked immanent on No. 9, but after hitting his second shot into the trees and pitching out, Pulliam hit a pitching wedge from 120 yards to 15 feet and made birdie.

But that's when Pulliam took charge, making five pars and a birdie on the 565-yard, par-5 11th hole. A bogey on No. 16, another par-3, pushed Pulliam to 8-over for the tournament and put him in a group of four players within one shot of the lead. Trouble loomed again on No. 17, but Pulliam made another scrambling par that provided the winning margin.

"That's what saved the win for me," Pulliam said, referring to No. 17. "My ball was sitting on a leaf and I couldn't put my club down behind it, because if the ball would have moved I would have incurred a penalty. But I chipped it from 50 yards to within two inches."

By winning, Pulliam will be automatically accepted into three AJGA tournaments in 2002.
Ryan Dunham of West Covina, Calif., Chad Bricker of Waynesboro, Pa., and Aaron Jessee of Gray, Tenn., all finished runner-up to Pulliam with 36-hole totals of 153. David Alonso of Massapequa Park, N.Y., and Jay Yonamine of Eden Prairie, Minn., tied for fifth at 155. Those five will receive two automatic entries, while those who shot 158 or better and placed amongst the top 15 will be automatically accepted into one AJGA event.

Dunham shared the lead with Pulliam for much of the back nine, but his luck ran out with a bad break on No. 17 which resulted in a bogey.

"I pulled my approach shot above and left of the green," Dunham said. "I had a bad lie in a divot and bladed it across the green."

Dunham still held hope on No. 18 with a 30-foot birdie attempt, but left the putt short of the cup.

"I knew it when I hit it," Dunham said. "I was disappointed I left it short."

The AJGA developed this series as an avenue for more members to earn playing opportunities at the national level and gain exposure for college golf scholarships. The other event, the AJGA Postseason Junior at Kissimmee/St. Cloud, is being held simultaneously at Celebration Golf Club in Celebration, Fla.
